Writing Inspiration: Feeding the Creative Mind
Improve Writing Skills by Connecting with the World Around You
Undoubtedly, the most critical point to being a writer is inspiration. Inspiration, for writers, is the gateway to expressing creativity of the mind and soul. Much like the human heart is the gateway of life to the rest of the body. In fact, today's social media relies so heavily upon said inspiration that if it did not exist, many of your favorite television shows, websites, music and movies would not exist at all. Consider it for a moment, will you? These are all things that are originated from the mind of a writer, or brought to life by an independently hired writer.
Generally, there are two ways in which writers will approach the creative process of their work. Some will wait for a moment that provides them with sparks of inspiration whereas others will face it head-on and seek out inspiration. There is really no right or wrong way of doing this, as different techniques will work better for some than for others. Personally, I see writing as a way in which a writer can confront the desires and fantasies that have previously been undiscovered. It isn't about fame or fortune, but rather a moment of knowing that a piece of ourselves and our own souls has been created and brought to life.
Every day, there are millions of phrases and images surrounding the entire world, waiting patiently as writing inspiration for you to discover or be discovered by. A photo, a couple passing you on the street, a beautiful morning view of the ocean... everything around you is a potentially wonderful piece of writing waiting to happen. And it's completely irrelevent how you find it as long as you do, because to let a moment pass by is as if losing an opportunity to create something amazing.
Observing the people surrounding daily events can be a significant source of understanding and writing inspiration. With each and every person we encounter having varying personalities, qualities, appearances and lives, every one of them is potentially a source of inspiration for an amazing story. Not only can the people around you be captured, in a sense, as a source of writing inspiration, but they can also help open your creative mind to an entirely new world of understanding the aspects of human nature. When you, as a writer, put yourself into the mind frame of a person who is entirely different from yourself, you are essentially allowing yourself and your writer's eye to examine life and emotions from varying perceptions. Opening your creative mind to the intricate differences and diversities among those around you is an absolute must for any fiction writer, as it is vital to distinguishing unique characters and personalities.
The very thing that sets writing apart from other forms of art is that it centers almost entirely around the creative mind and imagination. Unlike other forms of art such as paintings and photography or film, writing contains no visible images. The role of the writer is to weave the essence of the intended images between every written word, to in turn inspire a unique image inside the creative mind of each and every reader. Essentially, as a writer, what will begin as your writing inspiration will result in an entirely new inspiration inside the mind of those who read your work. The possibilities are endless, and yet it is all evolving from a single spark of inspiration.
Without writing inspiration, such novelists as Dean Koontz, Stephanie Meyer and Lisa Gardner would have never become what they are today. For Stephanie Meyer, a single dream about a vampire and human glistening in a field led her creative mind to develop the entire Twilight Saga, while both Dean Koontz and Lisa Gardner have written some of the most well-known and raved about suspense novels to have ever hit shelves. All of these writers were able to recognize and take hold of their writing inspiration and develop it into amazing stories that have sparked incredible amount of passion, understanding and inspiration of their own in their readers.
Taking the time to observe your surroundings and embrace writing inspiration is ultimately the greatest favor you can allow yourself as a writer. It does not matter how you do it or how the inspiration strikes you, as long as you do it. Being able to embrace the creative mind and tell a story that will not soon be forgotten is a highly desired ability among all writers, both aspiring and established, but it isn't impossible if you allow the moment to find you.
