Writing for the Internet

Millennials and Blogs

Nensi Farenhajt
Most everyone has a blog these days, and just about all Millennials have found some way of expressing themselves on the Internet. They've had computers and Internet access in their homes and schools for their entire lives; and since many of them cannot imagine their lives without computers, they increasingly lead on-line lives. From LiveJournal, through Xanga, and beyond, the younger generations is well used to writing on the web.

Indeed, easy on-line access has made it easy to write on-line; but writing well on-line is not as easy.

The better writers tend to separate text into smaller paragraphs, to make it easier for the viewer to follow their train of thought. When writing larger paragraphs, they use bolding, italicizing, and underlining. These techniques make their text much easier to follow.

Second, good writers tend to pick topics in which they are well versed. The easier it is to think about the material, the easier it is to explain it to the reader.

Third, writers looking for a larger audience tend to write text for more accessible venues, popular sites such as MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and the like, which allow for writers to market their texts.

These three components make a blogger's text easier to find and read; and the Millennial generation's uncanny understanding of the basics has enabled younger users to gain much headway in the battle for attention on-line.
