Writing for Internet Publications: A Beginner's Guide

Tools of the Trade and Where to Find Them

Thomas Griffin
When writing for Internet publications, there are several things a new writer must learn. The most important lesson is that once you've written an article for publication on the Internet you've created a product and in order for that product to sell you must know how those products are marketed on the Internet. Internet users are consumers. The Internet isn't just a place for discovering useful information; it's a marketplace where that information is consumed. As writers we're selling information to consumers. Information is our product. It may be wrapped in well-written prose, but it's information nonetheless. So, we need to become as expert at the craft of writing for the Internet as we are about the subjects we're writing about.

Don't let this idea of being an expert scare you. Like any art, writing articles for Internet publication is a skill you develop over the course of your career, not overnight. By expert I mean becoming proficient through practice. For example, one way to acquire Internet writing proficiency is to become more and more skilled at using keywords and keyword phrases, using the tools that help identify them in your writing, and learning why they're important to your success as an Internet writer.

How do I become skilled at using keywords and keyword phrases?

Start by researching as many articles you can about the subject. You will find several extremely helpful and informative articles on Associated Content's website using the following links:

How to Utilize Keywords and Keyword Density, by Michelle L. Devon

Shameless Self-Promotion: 5 Minutes to More Pageviews, by Donna Porter

How do I use the tools of the trade?

Many successful writers who publish on-line use tools that analyze their text for successful search engine optimization or SEO. Using the correct percentage of keywords and keyword phrases in your articles will increase the possibility that they'll pop up first in a consumer's search for your topic. Here's a link to an article that explains how to use those tools and where to find them for free on the Internet.

Web Writing, SEO and Keywords, by Pam Gaulin

Finally, Here's a link to a site with web writing tools and software. It has a short but comprehensive article about using keywords and how SEO's get their information. It also introduces an important topic: Web business and how to attract people to your website. This is especially important if you want more page views at your blog or to your Associated Content articles.
