Writing for IRA Isn't What It's Cracked Up to Be

Why Has This Web Content Company Been Gaining Black Marks from Its Past Writers

Nafeesah R. Abdullah
It seems as of the late web content company IRA-Internet Research Associates have been in the spotlight for a few infractions. A former writer here on Associated Content had pointed out that her firing was a result of someone tampering with her work. I wouldn't put it past anything that someone on there had been probably sabotaging people's work so that they would be fired. I am sorry that this person had her work sabotaged by someone, but I think the system of uploading work was not safe because once you uploaded your work to the page where you picked up your assignment anyone can read those files and possibly sabotage them as well so that it's of poor quality. Even if you tried to explain the situation it's like it's being looked at, as your fault and not taking a look at the fact that you wouldn't turn in work that was of poor quality. As far as anything goes this company needs to be red flagged and this came from having looked at an Internet complaint board and there were a war of words exchanged between one former writer and a couple current writers. Then "CC"-the owner of IRA posts something to this person and said some of the most disparaging things to her and you wonder does he even know the appropriate conduct is as a professional? Apparently not if he could sit up and post garbage about this individual. The person in question was that she was let go for reportedly copying historical information pertaining to her article when it was historical information so there are no way the details could be changed. Yet this person was let go anyway and the sad part was that this person wasn't paid for the work that was completed. It made me realize my own situation in dealing with IRA wasn't in vain since I was let go in August 2007 just after 4 months and this was after doing a 50 page report on golf and it wasn't until I turned it in that I got an email claiming that it was the second project that was rejected when I never got an email indicating the work was rejected a first or a second time. Then I got another email indicating that I no longer worked for IRA and that they were not paying for "off-topic" work yet you can only say so much on the topic of golf and it was too late I was already fired by the time the editors caught that small detail.

It's ok because everyone who was fired from IRA have gone on to find other writing gigs and are doing well. I have no hard feelings against IRA it gave me a great place to build my skill as a writer, but I will not tolerate the BS that comes with writing for web content companies. It's disappointing when you're fired for something other than plagiarism and copyright infringement. I would rather do honest work than to be like some writers who think they can get one over on writing firms by turning every single project in as their own when it's not really theirs. If anyone's thinking that they'll find job security with IRA think again because that didn't stop a writer who was promoted as an editor and she too was fired for a misunderstanding that wasn't resolved. I had talked to those who were dismissed by IRA and it seems like there's something shady going on because in having a conversation with the individuals (names aren't being mentioned for privacy reasons) involved. I realized after talking to the individuals I had spoken to made me realize that I have a lot more to offer by taking my skills elsewhere and where my work will be appreciated. I hope that those who had come and gone from IRA realize that you will have a chance to prove yourself with those who are going to really take you seriously as a writer. The writer who did the piece is telling the truth that once you upload the work that someone can actually go and start tampering with it changing stuff around and even uploading work that you didn't do in place of that. It clearly says that there's no secure way to upload your work and not have it at risk for being tampered with.

This person was generous enough to pick up assignments past their due date to complete the order, but apparently someone didn't like her and decided to sabotage her assignments which eventually cost her job with IRA. It's pretty clear that some people will go to great lengths to sabotage your efforts in something and if you're a person who does good work and doesn't copy other people's stuff and submitting as your own and yet you get fired for something other than that. What the heck is really going on here? I admit to making mistakes and fixed them when necessary and did my best to research all the topics I was working on for accuracy so that it wasn't misrepresented in any way when it was submitted for payment. This writer who did the article about IRA has really set the standard to be honest about what writers would deal with working for this company and how some writers who know they don't do good work would sabotage another person's work so they can get rid of them through deviant and callous means. Like this person I've moved on and gotten writing jobs and I do hope they work out since now I email my assignments directly to the owner and not posting them up on the page where the assignment was picked up. In the end I learned that IRA doesn't really guarantee job security if wanting to do quality writing assignments. I will say that $35 is a good start, but if the owner isn't going to be a fair person then that says a lot about the level of professionalism of the owners over these web content companies. A good writer will do what it takes to keep their own work honest and in line with the standards of journalism integrity and to the highest professional standards. I love what I do and as mama said if one door closes another one opens and I said that to myself after being let go from working for IRA, but I wasn't sad I knew that there were other opportunities out there and the one thing that makes me a survivor is that you win some and you lose some, but that doesn't stop you from really getting out there and pounding the pavement to move up after a disappointing blow. Those who were fired from IRA for something other than copyright infringement and plagiarism are doing their thing and they got up dusted themselves off and kept moving. To my fellow writers you took your blows, but you got up like professionals and you kept on moving and gained a whole new prospective on your craft and your skill as a writer.

I'm sure glad I took the time to do a little research. I answered an ad for this company on the job boards. They sent me the "Welcome" packet via email. I am reading a lot of things that are making me think maybe I'll just skip them and keep looking for real writing work.

At least here at AC I feel safe and appreciated! thanks for the heads up!
