It's Friday night, and a dance is being held at a nearby high school. Many students are dancing and having a great time. Four tenth graders, however, are not. For each of them, the night is going very badly indeed.
Cynthia went to the dance with the idea of asking out Michael. She was going to see if he wanted to go to a party tomorrow night at her friend's house. She can imagine how impressed all of her friends would be if she showed up at the party with Michael. But when Cynthia went to ask Michael, she chickened out. She is too afraid that he will say no and laugh at her.
Mike has no idea that Cynthia is interested in him. They chatted a bit at the beginning of the party, but his mind was on other things. Mike wants to go out with Shaneka. They are in the same history class and often talk and laugh with each other before class begins. Mike thinks Shaneka likes him too, but when he asks her out she turns him out flat. She doesn't even say why, he just turns and walks away.
Shaneka is really confused. She has been dating Martin for two weeks. Things went great the first week, but now she isn't so sure. Lately he has begun to get on her nerves. Now, to make matters worse, Mike has asked her out. She had to say no, because she's with Martin, but Shaneka is starting to think that Mike might be the right guy for her. After all, they both like the same thing: music. Martin is more into video games, which Shaneka thinks are stupid.
Martin is furious. He saw some guy he didn't know talking to Shaneka. Shaneka didn't say anything, but Martin is pretty sure he asked Shaneka out. He can just tell from her body language. Martin is worried that this other guy is going to try and steal Shaneka away from him. He's scared, but he's also angry. He can't wait to find this other guy and have a nice long talk with him.
