Writing a Memorable College Admission Essay

Tips From a College Admissions Representative

College recruiters are heading out across the nation, visiting high schools and college fairs everywhere. They are looking for the best and the brightest to join their institution next fall. They are armed with shiny brochures, pens, and pennants, hoping to grab student's attention.

After meeting with recruiters, high school seniors are sitting down at their computers wondering how they are going to write an essay that makes them memorable. What can you possibly say to make yourself stick out amongst thousands of applicants?

Here are a few tips from an admissions representative to help you write the perfect essay.

Read the question. I mean really read the question. Most students read the admissions essay question once and start writing. Read the question. Then read it again out loud. What are they asking you? What do they want to know? Maybe it is a straightforward question asking why you want to attend their institution. Or perhaps they are trying to learn about your reasoning abilities or how you make a decision. Maybe they want to know about your strengths or your weaknesses. Take the time to figure out what they want, and it will be easier to give it to them.

Brainstorm, brainstorm, brainstorm. Make lists or charts or whatever will help you visualize. Brainstorm your best qualities and what makes you unique and desirable. Most students just start writing, hoping to get the essay finished. Take some time and brainstorm your answers. The more you think about the question, the more answers you will come up with. And, obviously, the more answers you have, the more likely you will find the perfect answer.

Why should they want you? Enrollment numbers at universities across the country are at record highs. Applications are flooding admissions departments, so you need to set yourself apart. What makes you unique? Are you an A+ student and a star athlete? Do you do community service every weekend? Do you have your own band? Do you work or volunteer after school? This is the time to sell yourself! You are the product, and you want the university to want you. Do not be afraid to highlight your best qualities. If you don't tell them, they won't know.

Use examples. Don't just say you are a hard worker. Explain why. Don't say you are a good listener. Explain why you believe that. Don't just say attending their school would be a dream come true - tell them why. Admissions representatives aren't looking for empty words. They are looking for thoughtful individuals that are aware of their strengths and weaknesses, and know how to share those with others in a courteous manner.

Ask for help. If you are having a tough time thinking of your strengths, don't be afraid to ask your friends or family for their thoughts. They may have a whole separate idea of what makes you unique. Their ideas could spark a great essay.

Spell check! There is nothing more terrifying than receiving an essay with incorrect punctuation, misspelled words and poor grammar. There is a simple fix to this - have multiple people proofread your essay before submission. It will be well worth the extra effort.

Hopefully these tips make the Admission Essay a little less intimidating. Best of luck, and enjoy this new chapter in your life!
