For both freelance writers and business professionals, having knowledge of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can go far in distributing awareness of your product or service among the internet world. With an increasing amount of popularity on the web and a high demand for well-written, quality content it is imperative that you gain an understanding for the way search engines operate in order to see your content climb the ladder of search rankings.

Essentially, when a user searches the web, he or she is in search of content that is informative, entertaining and enjoyable to read. The reality, however, is that you can be producing work of excellence but if search engines are unable to locate it, the chances are slim that your content will receive the acknowledgment that it deserves.

What Exactly Is SEO?

SEO is the general process of scanning the web to determine and improve which websites are most relative and of the highest quality in comparison to the search terms. Aside from text content, SEO covers searches in images, audio, video and those which are specific to an industry. Methods used to improve search engine rankings often include both inbound and back links, utilizing keywords for keyword density and overall website design. In consideration to the fact that the largest portion of internet users do not search deeper than the first page of results when conducting a keyword search, SEO helps to ensure that by use of meta tags and the right use of keywords, that the most relative content is displayed at the top of the search results.

How Page Rankings Are Determined

The foundation for page ranking determination is to measure the importance and relevancy of search engine results. Rankings for individual websites and pages are determined by the quality and amount of inbound and back links, the amount of relative keywords to the search as well as the overall possibility that internet users will find their way to a certain website. The links to a specific website or webpage are important. However, the quality and popularity of the websites that direct back to an individual page hold a significant amount of weight in determining page rankings. For example, when a popular website generates links to other relative websites, that link holds more value than that of one that has been directed by a smaller and lesser known website or webpage.

A Note On Keywords

Keywords are defined as the terms that are used when conducting an internet search. These terms determine the content that is reached as a result of the search. When users conduct searches on the internet, search terms are a bit different from everyday conversation. Rather than searching for "How do I cook green beans?" a keyword search would likely be more along the lines of "green bean recipes." Because of this, in order for a page to be indexed by search engines, the content must include terms that are relative to internet searches. Slight differences in keywords can significantly impact the results that are returned by the search engine. By altering the search phrase to "holiday green bean recipes," the returned results will differ from the results that are returned by the keywords "green bean recipes."

Utilizing Keyword Density

Keywords are also used to determine search results by the keyword density in relative web pages. By comparing the number of times that keywords and phrases are used within a relative article in comparison to the total number of words, search engines are better able to determine which content is most relative to the search terms conducted by users. Ultimately, the more frequently that the keywords or phrases appear within the article, the higher the page ranking it will receive. However, the technology of search engines has advanced to the point of eliminating those articles which have a keyword density that is overly high in comparison to the total words. This way, search engines such as Google and Yahoo are better able to determine which sites have the best content. To business and freelance professionals who , this helps to ensure that their quality work is not overwhelmed by content of lesser quality that is crowding the search results. Generally, the optimal amount of keyword density is between one and three percent, though that can differ with content that has higher word counts.

Quality Content

In addition to SEO skills, it is important that content is entertaining and informative to readers. When writing online, even the best SEO skills can become irrelevant if the content itself is not of useful and high quality information to readers. Having content that is useful to readers not only helps to ensure that readers are likely to recommend the link, but it also goes a long way in helping the content to climb in page rankings. Ultimately, when it comes right down to it, users must be able to relate to your content on a level that applies to every day life and information that users will find helpful.

Tips For SEO When Writing Online

-Before publishing content on the web, writers and business professionals will get further by first brainstorming and documenting the keywords that are most relative to and used when searching for content of the same type.

-Incorporate the keywords and phrases into the content in a way that seems natural, such as that which would be used in everyday conversation.

-By using hypertext links within the body of content, professionals can enhance the interest of readers and point them in the direction of other relative content, thereby increasing the interest of readers in the overall website or blog.

I didn't think of using links within the text of my articles. This isn't a bad idea at all!
