Writing a Paragraph

There are three basic building blocks in communicating ideas through writing. These are the sentence, paragraph, and the essay.

The sentence expresses one or more complete thoughts. The paragraph expresses one idea and is usually made up of several sentences that explain or support that idea. The essay, on the other hand, consists of multiple paragraphs that express and explain a series of related idea, all of which support a larger, broader idea.

The following shows how the parts of paragraphs are similar to an essay:

In the paragraph, the Topic is the one thing the writing is about. While in the essay, that is the Subject. The Topic Sentence states the one key point in a paragraph. Thesis Statement, on the other hand, states the single idea in the essay. In a paragraph, the Supporting details explain the key point and the Supporting paragraphs elaborate the thesis or controlling idea. In addition, the Transitional words make connections among ideas in a paragraph. Transitional words/sentences in the essay provides connections. The Last Sentence connects all ideas to key points in writing a paragraph. This is done by the Conclusion or the concluding paragraph in the essay.

The structure of a paragraph is not complex; there are usually two basic elements-the Topic Sentence that states the main point or controlling idea and the Supporting Details which are the sentences that explain the main point.
