Writing a Poem for Valentine's Day

Christian K. Martinez
It's that special day
That special time of the year
When love come's to play
And you quaver in fear.

When there's no need quite yet
Just pick up your pen
Don't be nervous, don't fret
Just tell your love that you love her all over again.

It's Valentine's day, just around the corner already. I know, it started to sneak up on me too. Valentine's day is getting close and you want to write a poem for the love of your life. The only problem there is you aren't sure what to write, you aren't sure how to write a poem and you are sitting at your desk, pen poised but unmoving. The first thing you need to do is set out to brainstorm.

Think about the message you need to send, what do you want to say? How do you feel when you two are together? When does your heart skip a beat? When does it quicken? What was your best day together, your fondest memory? What do you see her in her/his eyes? Think about your message and as you do start writing, start thinking about the person you love, writing them out on paper.

What color eyes does they have?
What color skin?
What does their voice remind you of?
What do they smell like when you hold them close?
If they were an animal, what animal would they be?
If they were a color, what color would they be?
What is their favorite thing to do?
What is the first thing you think of when they call you?
What did you think the first time you met?
How did you meet?
If they were a taste/flavor what would they be?
What is their smile like?

Now think about these questions, start jotting them down. Start writing it all out, don't worry about rhyme or structure or even making your poem yet. Focus on what it is that you have to say. Now once you have all this out, you have a focus. It's time to start your poem! Start writing. Don't worry about making it the best in the world just pour your love into it and they will appreciate it. They will love it.
