Writing Poetry for Summer

Christian K. Martinez
So you're trying to write some summer themed poetry? It isn't as easy as it looks you're starting to think? That's both true and not, it really depends on how you approach the endeavor. Like with all poetry, Summer themed poetry takes a little planning so you can get it all just right.

Ideas
The first thing that you need to establish in your poetry is the ideas you want to put inside of it. For summer that should be a fairly easy things to do. What do you think of Summer? What does Summer mean to you? What does it mean to people as a whole? What kinds of things do you associate with Summer? Start churning your mental cauldron before you move on to start thinking about images.

Images
Next what you need to do is start figuring out what images you want your poem to convey. That should also be fairly simple now that you've gotten your ideas churning. What do all of those things look like? And more than visuals, the "feel" of what you're trying to write. How do you establish that mood? That mental place that you want someone to go. That's the image you have to establish in your mind, now you can begin working your way towards that.

Words
First you need to start brainstorming the words to do so. That's the main component of poetry, is it not? It is painting with only words. They are your colors, your brushes, your canvas. So think of that image, the scene, the place inside your mind that you are trying to communicate. Hold that image in your head and just start writing the kinds of words that make that place what it is.

Putting it All Together
Finally you have what you need to make a poem. Spend time putting words together, describing artistically what makes your image and the tone a reality for yourself. Fix it fully on paper, in words and in language. The forms you use are just a method, a method of expresion. Feel each form out and find what fits your poem.
