Writing is Tough (Poem)

A Sample of My Strange Mind as a Teen

Allana Calhoun
What does one do
when one has to write
something sad but beautiful
or something pretty and bright
and one doesn't have a clue
on what words are right?

It's an extremely tough job
Being a writer, that is
It's harder than a new actor
trying to go up in showbiz
and it's harder than a clown
wearing a wig full of frizz

Look, do you see what I mean?
just look at this poem
I could never be an artist
sponsored in Rome
I'm just too weird for that
I must be a gnome

As a child I was always inquisitive about things. I had to know the ins and outs of everything. It was hard for me to just accept things at face value. I’ll give my parents credit. They were very patient and tolerant with the variety of questions that I always asked.

A part of my childhood crept up on me suddenly the other day. While I was looking at an appointment book my eyes were drawn to the categorical listings of the Birthstone and Flower designations for your month of birth. Again my inquiring mind just had to know who was behind saying that a certain birthstone and flower is relegated for your particular month of birth. I don’t know why I just became so fixated on this. Perhaps I was bored or feeling a little restless.

I was born in February. My birthstone is amethyst. According to this listing I’m supposed to represent sincerity. Now I’d like to think that I am a sincere person. I love the color purple and any derivative of it. No problem there. My birt
