Writing for UK County Magazines
If you are a freelance writer and you haven't considered writing for UK county magazines, it may be a market you want to research further. Although the pay isn't as high for some of the more widely-known magazines, they are often in need of new freelance writers and they tend to publish and pay rather quickly. Furthermore, UK county magazines offer an opportunity to write about the things you love without a great deal of competition.
Celebrity Associations
While you probably wouldn't write celebrity profiles on just anyone for UK county magazines, you would do well to research celebrities and where they were born. If you can connect a celebrity to one of the UK counties, you can sell the article and make more money than for most of the other topics. As a bonus, if you research deceased celebrities with local ties, you don't have to worry about the pressure to score an interview to accompany your article.
Historical Events
No matter the size, most places in the world have had interesting, cataclysmic or little-known historical events in their past. Do some research on the area where the UK county magazine is located and see if you can't turn up information about an interesting historical event. These articles tend to sell quite well, especially if you can dredge up a few photographs to go with it.
Twin Articles
I don't know why, but for some reason twin articles do well in UK county magazines. I'm not talking about identical or fraternal human twins, but town twins. If you live in or near a town in the U.S. that has a UK namesake, you can often sell a story comparing the two towns, from food to attractions to activities. This can be a fun article to write and doesn't require that you've visited both cities; just do your research.
Poetry & Prose
It can be difficult to sell either poetry or prose to any magazine in the US or the UK, but UK county magazines often purchase them. This is especially true if you've written a short story that takes place in the UK county for which you will be writing or a poem about a specific place or attraction in that area.
