First, you should not be pacing in little areas in front of the podium. You should also not be rocking or tapping your feet. You need to remain as relaxed as you possibly can, using the podium for support if you are extra nervous. Even though you may be nervous, try to keep your knees from locking, this will cause you to rock nervously, and often without realizing that you are doing this.
If the height of the podium presents a problem for you, try other methods. You can use a small microphone or headset to help you speak loud enough for all to hear you. Also, if the podium is too tall, you can try standing to the side of it. Most podiums have flexible microphones specifically for this reason.
You should also know how to maintain eye contact with your listeners. You do not want your presentation to seem aimless and droning. When you read from notes or speeches without engaging in eye contact, you sound like a mono-toned robot. You need to use eye contact in order to keep the audience engaged in your presentation.
If possible, use a podium that can be moved. You may find it effective at some point in your presentation to involve in engaging conversation with the audience. To do this effectively, you should move the podium to a place where it is out of the way and you are standing freely.
Finally, to avoid stumbles in your introduction, try to choose a person who knows something about you to give the introduction. If this is not possible, try to write your own small introduction for the person to read. It should be short, but briefly explain what you do and how it is related to your presentation.
Most importantly, show passion and interest in your presentation. Your listeners want to know that you are excited about what you are presenting to them. Use facial and hand gestures for emphasis when possible. To accomplish this correctly, you may have to more away from the podium, where your movements will be seen by those in the audience.
If you keep the tips in mind when making a presentation, using a podium should pose no problems to you. Your presentation is that much closer to being successful.
