WVU Back to the Basics

No Emotion

Is it just me or did West Virginia University play like a Division II football team Saturday against East Carolina ?

West Virginia was ranked #8 in the Country going into the showdown with the Pirates but walked away on the wrong end of the score. No they didn't lose a close game. No they didn't lose a game that was even close to being close. They absolutely stunk up the field and got killed. Will the Mountaineers breathe again or is this what the rest of the season holds ?

I don't know about you Mountaineer and college football fans out there but I can't take another funeral like the one East Carolina gave WVU. Lets face it, Shepherd College or some low division school would of put up more than 3 points in this ball game against a East Carolina team that has nothing great about them at all.

East Carolina did look like they was a decent ball club but they are far from great. You can't tell me they are 21 points better than West Virginia. How did West Virginia lose by 21 points you ask ? By playing like they was in high school !

Lets start out with the secondary. Is there one defensive back on the team who can make a play ? There is too many holes in that 3-3-5 defense for receivers to set in and make plays. No its not the defensive schemes fault but rather the players within the scheme. The linebackers are suppose to be the position with the most depth on this years defense but they are sliding off of running backs and not moving their feet. Seems they just stop at contact and slide right off the opponent.

Pat White, the best college football player in the Nation got shut down. How can this happen ? Well he had a decent game running the ball but mostly on busted pass plays. The receivers act literally as if they are scared to catch the ball. One thing they aren't afraid of and that is dropping the ball. It is sad how much these guys get recruited and the star treatment they get to not be able to even catch the ball.

Bill Stewart is a wonderful guy and a decent coach and you just want to see this man succeed. He just seems afraid to put some fire into the team. I know his philosophy is to not yell but there comes a time when players need motivation. The players bragged all summer how they loved not getting yelled at. Well look at them now getting their butt's handed to them out their on the grid iron. Babied all summer and now it is paying off for every team that is lining up on the Mountaineer schedule.

You would think with a 2 million dollar coaching staff that the much needed adjustments will be made for week 3 against Colorado. The main adjustment is to go back to the basics and play with emotion.
