WWE Backlash at Philips Arena in Atlanta: Featuring 5 Championship Title Matches

Wendy Dawn
Sunday's, April 29, 2007, WWE returns to Atlanta, Georgia for a night of championship wrestling in Philip's arena. The event, Backlash, is just what the name implies. It is the backlash of grudges and revenge from the recent events at Wrestlemania 23.

Backlash's main event was announced by Michael Pena, demonstrating a nearly, unknown softer side of wrestling. Pena was announcing as a fulfillment of his wish to the Make a Wish Foundation. The WWE Championship match announced by Pena has been labeled be WWE a "Fatal Four-Way Match." The match pits John Cena, Edge, Randy Orton, and Shawn Michaels against each other in a match full of grudges, and gluttony for the WWE Championship title.

Shawn Michaels, has been a big name in WWE for a long time, relative to John Cena, who is a hard man to beat. Both Michaels and Cena fought last month at Wrestlemania for the WWE Championship Title. Cena ended the match by defending the title he has held for 7 months.

Ironically, Shawn Michaels and John Cena shared the Tagteam Championship title until an "Over the Top Battle Royal" a couple of weeks ago on RAW. The "Over the Top Battle Royal" was fought on RAW, the night after Cena beat Michaels to retain his rights to the WWE Championship Title belt. In that tagteam match, Shawn Michaels threw his own partner, John Cena over the top rope. This allowed The Hardy Boys to win the match and Tagteam title. At the time Michaels, who was obviously holding a grudge against Cena said, "The only thing that matters is the WWE championship." Orton bullied his way into the action by telling Michaels he had already had his chance, and he had lost the Championship Title to Cena the previous night. Thus, the youngest WWE Champion of all time mouthed his way into the four-way match at Backlash, in Atlanta.

How did Edge, the rated R superstar, known for his "sex and violence" moniker get into the four-way title match? Edge and Orton have recently worked together as a team. In a real world, it would have been the result of a comedy of errors. But, in WWE, it doesn't take much for tempers to flair.

On Monday, April 16, John Cena faced Edge and Orton in a two on one handicap match. Edge aimed to ram Cena with a spear, but missed and landed Orton instead. Viewing the mishap, Shawn Michaels ran out and tried to sweet-chin-music Cena. He has a standing grudge and can't wait for his shot at the Championship title. Instead Cena dodged the kick and Edge heard sweet-chin-music, before his lights went out. Cena then slammed Michaels with his signature FU, which resembles a fireman's carry turned body slam. Edge was still out cold, so Cena covered him for an easy win.

Now, the four will face off again, this time at Backlash, on April 29. Everyone is out for revenge, and the coveted Title after the milieu on Monday Night Raw. The face off should prove intense for the fans at Backlash.

There is one uncertainty in the Backlash line-up, and that is whether Mr. Kennedy, who won The Money in Bank Ladder Match at Wrestlemania, will make an appearance at Backlash to cash in on his title shot. He can show for the WWE Championship or the World Championship Match. Most fans anticipate he will blare his self-proclamation during the World Championship Match because of issues involving Undertaker.

At Wrestlemania on April 14, Undertaker beat the Smackdown World Heavyweight Title out of Batista. At Backlash, the two will once again face off for a Championship Match. The Backlash match will be World Heavyweight Champion Undertaker versus Batista in a "Last Man Standing Match." The two have arranged a duel this quickly after the Wrestlemania title match due to the "Thirty Day Clause." The clause allows a title rematch before thirty days lapses if you are man enough to fight back for your championship title.

This is where fans believe Mr. Kennedy will come into the picture. According to Wrestlingmania Blog, Mr. Kennedy has already suffered a defeat from the Undertaker's tombstone pile driver. This will be aired on Friday Night Smackdown this week, which is taped on Tuesdays. Now, Mr. Kennedy has a reason to face off Undertaker or Batista at Backlash for the World Heavy Weight Title. This may be where he calls in his Title shot.

In the backlash World Heavyweight Champion face-off Undertaker will likely defeat Batista, retaining his recently earned Title Belt. Speculation has it that Mr. Kenney will com out at this point to make his claim on the Championship Match, battling Undertaker for the World Title. Some fans think that Kennedy will take the title, others still believe he is no match for Undertaker.

Another major battle announced for Backlash is the World tagteam Championship. Matt and Jeff Hardy will do battle with Lance Kade and Trevor Murdoch.
Murdoch and Kade are perceived as redneck backyard wrestles, and it seems a cinch that The Hardy Boys will win. If they don't, it will be a devastating upset. If the Hardys do win, they will continue hanging on to the title they won when Michaels threw Cena out of the ring.

Speculation of a Hardy win is borne of the fact that Lance Kade already has a recent win, last week on RAW, thus, leaving speculators guessing that he has earned himself a loss at Backlash. Also, Kade and Murdoch won the number one contendership by defeating Carlito and Rick Flare, who needs to stay home in his lazy boy.

There should be no disappointment in Atlanta when it comes to championship matches at Backlash. The Women's championship match between current champion Melina and Mickie James. This promises to be another grudge match because of this week's happenings at the WWE Diva Fashion Show in Milan Italy, Monday. When Torrie was declared the winner, Melina, in a rage of jealous furry attacked Torrie. Mickie immediately jumped into the fracas to aide Torrie. Soon everyone turned on Melina, and her friend, Victoria. A Diva heyday ensued.

Melina and Mickie will settle the duel at backlash. Will furry carry Melina to victory, or is it time for Mickie to reclaim her place in the spotlight.

There is still another Championship Title to be battled out at Backlash, the ECW World Championship match. The current Extreme World Champion is Bobby Lashley. He won the Millionaire Hair match, defeating Umaga and resulting in Mr. McMahon sporting a shaved head. McMahon is out for revenge. Mr. McMahon, Shane McMahon, and Umaga will go after Bobby Lashley in a "Three On One Handicap Match." We can't say Mr. McMahon has lost his head, but he certainly has lost his hair. He wants revenge. If anyone of the three man team wins, who gets to claim the title? Predictions are that Umaga will be the last man standing, and walk away with the ECW Championship Title, since he recently lost his Intercontinental Title to Santino Marella.

Come Sunday, April 29, 2007 we will see. These championship events make for a promising event at Backlash. Backlash will not be televised, so be sure to order your Pay Per View, or read about it later that night right here on Associated Content.
