WWE Hall of Famer "Sensational" Sherri Martel Passes Away

Former wrestler and manager "Sensational" Sherri Martel passed away on Friday morning at her mother's home in Birmingham, Alabama at the age of 49.

Martel first started her career in the AWA in the early 1980s. In 1985, she won the AWA Women's Championship when she defeated Candy Devine. They had a year-long feud with the title changing hands on a few occasions.

During her feud with Devine, Martel began to manage the tag team of "Playboy" Buddy Rose and "Pretty Boy" Doug Somers. The team under Martel eventually won the AWA tag team titles. In June of 1986, Martel won the AWA Women's Championship for the third and final time from Devine.

She left the AWA for the WWF in 1987 and beat her mentor, The Fabulous Moolah, in her debut. She defended the title against some of the top female wrestlers in the business at the time which included Debbie Combs and Velvey McIntyre. She would go on to hold the title for 15 months before losing it to "Rockin" Robin.

Her rivalry continued with Moolah when both of them faced each other when they were captains of the first-ever women's tag team Survivor's Series matchup.

As the early 1990s approached, the women's division had been fased out in the WWF/E. Martel then managed "Macho Man" Randy Savage and it was during this time that she was referred to as "Sensational Queen". They feuded with Hulk Hogan, Miss Elizabeth, Dusty Rhodes, and Sapphire during this period of time.

Later on in 1991, "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase acquired her services, but it would not last. The group dissolved and she began to manage the career of Shawn Michaels.

In 1994, Martel left for WCW and became manager of Ric Flair as he began to feud with Hulk Hogan and Sting. It was at this time that she was known as "Sensuous" Sherri.

After leaving Flair, she managed the tag team of Harlem Heat to the WCW Tag Team Championship as "Sister" Sherri.

In 2006, Martel received induction into the WWE Hall of Fame. She was inducted in by Ted DiBiase.

She leaves behind her husband, Robert Schrull, and they were married for 10 years. The couple lived in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Sherri was a cousin on my mother's side. As far as I've read, no cause of death was reported, which possibly adds yet another notch on Vince's belt to go along with the ones for Eddie Guerrero, Brian Pillman, the British Bulldog, and Owen Hart.

Great article. Brings back memories of when wrestling was actually fun to watch.

How sad. I wonder if we'll find out how she died. Moolah and Mae Young are still kicking, but like Crystal said, most of the women sure don't seem to live long.

It's sad, nobody in wrestling lasts very long. It's a hard life.

Truly sad. I heard about this last night. I wonder what kind of tribute she will get tonight since the big deal is the demise of Vince. Except for Moolah, I've noticed that the women don't live long. Shame!
