WWE NXT Storyline Spoilers

Professional Wrestling History is Repeating Itself . . . Again

The Mick
WWE NXT was supposed to be the next big thing, right?

Well did you watch it?

By the ratings, no, you didn't. NXT got poor ratings almost as low as WWE's version of ECW. Now, I'm not saying that the talent was bad. These are the aces from the WWE developmental territory in Florida (FCW). No, it isn't the talent. It's the writing.

This was a mishmash of Tough Enough and American Idol and Survivor all wrapped up in one big nasty mess. WWE will be lucky to salvage the careers of these men after this sort of weird television exposure. But I'll get to that in a minute.

What about this, dare I say it, INVASION angle? Haven't we seen this already? Didn't we see it with the NWO? Didn't we see it when WWE bought WCW? Didn't we see it on TNA? Good grief. Hasn't almost every wrestling promotion had some sort of faction "invasion" in the last few years? Yup. This is a tired and true storyline. No, I didn't misspell. I meant to say tired.

See, the problem with warming old storylines is that there is always somebody who will say "we've see that before" and lose interest. You're not going to re-create the NWO, no matter what you call your faction. There will never again be The Legion of Doom, The Freebirds, or even the Rock N Roll Express. There's never going to be another Hulk Hogan. Even Hulk Hogan can't repeat Hulk Hogan. What wrestlers, promoters, writers, and bookers have to do is WORK to come up with new material.

Have you seen a remake of an old movie that was better than the original? Have you seen a movie that was better than the book? Did you like Ishtar? Of course not. Originality is what got you to read that book or watch the original film, or enjoy the glory that was The Ultimate Warrior. New blood is needed, and with that new blood, fresh ideas to captivate a new generation of viewers.

Promoters, don't worry about the nostalgia factor. Wrestling fans will be wrestling fans. They don't have to see Iron Sheik try to wrestle again. They love all that the Iron Sheik accomplished and they love him for who he is. Let the men and women retire with dignity. Let's get some new blood in the ring and fresh ideas.

As for the NXT revolution, how long do you expect it to run? They've all been "fired". What will happen to the NXT guys? Well, it is possible, they will "invade" SmackDown as well. In fact, it's possible they write NXT into the Undertaker's vegetative state story. It's possible NXT will become an NWO-type faction, unifying all the good guys and bad guys to take on the enemy. Gee, what an old story. It's going to get old fast.

Let me say this too. Losing Bryan Danielson was a bad move. Why he signed on to be a jobber is beyond me, as he has great talent. However, I'm sure he will land on his feet somewhere. His mic skills need work, as do most of the NXT guys, but he was further along than the others. WWE appeared to be so eager to get new guys online that they sacrificed development. Hope the vets enjoy their vacation because there appears to be very little to take their place.

WWE needs to learn from the past, in particular WCW, and not repeat their mistakes. Just because they are the main show does not mean they can dish out crap and expect to increase profits. It didn't work for WCW and it won't work for WWE. Fresh ideas, my friends. Write compelling storylines without turning back the clock and you will have a recipe for present and future success.
