WWE Summerslam 2007 Preview: ECW Brand

Bruce Bostwick
The ECW Brand is known simply as the development league brand but will have themselves matches regarding the ECW Heavyweight Championship. The reigning champion John Morrison will put the gold on the line against #1 contender CM Punk. It has been a rivalry that has simply developed since Vengeance: Night of Champions. Originally it was supposed to be Chris Benoit and it became Morrison, then known as Johnny Nitro. This is going to be happening on August 26th, 2007, the 20th Annual Summerslam. It's also the 2nd Summerslam to have the ECW World Title involved and the ECW Brand in the mix as well.

The feud that has been building for months in the making and now CM Punk is getting perhaps one more shot at becoming the ECW World Champion. He right now is the most positioned challenger for the title and there aren't too many faces for Morrison to face him as champion. Punk has been on the ECW Brand for over a year and has worked his way up to now being the top contender for the championship. The way it happened was due to the 15 minutes of fame bout, which saw CM Punk, win to get himself a chance at the championship. At this moment, it would be easy to say Morrison to retain but since there aren't too many options for him at this moment as champion, it would be wise to have CM Punk take the championship due to there being more heels to challenge for it than faces. It doesn't mean that it will happen but based upon that, it would be best to say CM Punk wins the gold and then someone else will challenge Punk for the title. As for who, it could be Burke but that's been done all ready but there's also Thorn but that's about it. Then again, the ECW Roster doesn't have much of anyone there at the moment. In this bout and this is going to be a prediction but it is going to be CM Punk to take the gold after connecting with the GTS (Go To Sleep) finisher he's been using as of late.

Winner and new ECW World Champion: CM Punk

There are potential match ups that could happen at Summerslam but most likely not going to happen. Mainly due to Raw and Smackdown being more of a top priority. ECW as stated before is just a development brand to get people ready to either be on one of the two shows. There's the rivalry of Big Daddy V and the Boogeyman. As obvious as it can be, Big Daddy V was Viscera and to go back further with him involved with the WWE, he was also Mabel from Men on a Mission. Now this is perhaps the scariest look he's had to date and now doesn't wear a shirt. That could scare children and give them potential nightmares just by looking at him. The Boogeyman however has changed his paint and no longer has the Darth Maul paint and recently added a strange wig.

The only other possible bout would be Steven Richards and Kevin Thorn. This is not a typo at all. Richards has actually won some matches over Thorn and it seems to building for a rivalry. While this could be involved with Summerslam, it is also not likely but could very well be a Heat bout or a Dark match sold exclusively when it's eventually released. These bouts however are the only main feuds going on at this present time.It is quite obvious that the brand has a lack of wrestlers on there so there probably will be at least one match for sure but no more than probably two. It might be a development place but it could use a little bit more wrestlers to help make it have some variety instead of the same thing over and over again. Of course, having only one hour of TV time doesn't help matters at all and that makes it worse

  • John Morrison is facing off with CM Punk for the ECW World Title.
ECW in a sense developed stars that weren't in WWF or WCW when they had the Monday Night Wars.
