See, Ms. Holly recently transformed from a blonde bombshell, typical wrestling diva type into a straight-edged "goody-two-shoes" brunette who urges her fellow wrestling females to cover up. All for the sake of a storyline, of course. A storyline, might I add, that is making her appear a 'bad guy' amongst wrestling fans.
The WWE has encountered many changes in the past few years. First, with its acquiring of the WCW and having the WCW and WWF in matches against each other, then a merger between the two into one bigger WWF, the organization's name officially changing to WWE, after decades of existence, and finally now having two separate rosters for the two different event on Mondays and Thursdays: Smackdown and Raw. I asked Molly how these changes have affected Vince McMahon's entertainment empire.
"Now that they just have two different brands, Raw and Smackdown, there are a lot more opportunities for more storylines. The women's division has really flourished, and so has the cruiser weight division. It's also just great to see a lot of new, young talent coming into help the shows be great," she said.
With the different storyline going on throughout Raw and Smackdown compared to the number of actual people on the roster, some may not always be in the limelight. So, what is one to do when they are not on the front burner?
"I think it depends why they are not in the storyline. If it is because they are injured, they will do a lot of autograph signings and personal appearances and on-sale ticket dates. If it is just that they are not in a story, the talent will still go to show and sharpen skills by wrestling in the afternoon, or be on Heat and Velocity, and on non-televised matches before the live event, called preliminary matches," she said.
Fortunately, for Molly Holly, she has seen quite a bit of attention on the mat these days. For a while, Molly was teamed up with the superhero-like Hurricane, where together, the caped duo fought for truth, justice and tried to protect the good citizens of the WWE. This storyline was a lot of fun, and Molly had some silly antics. However, Molly shed her cape, and actually ended her relationship with Hurricane by trying to steal the hardcore title from him during the most recent Wrestlemania. Now, as stated above, Molly has changed her image completely. I asked, "Blondes have more fun. Why go brunette?"
"My current character is very anti-fun!" she said. "My new character I would describe as jealous and self-righteous." She elaborated that now she is playing a bad guy, which is a very challenging task.
"It's very challenging to play a bad guy. It takes a lot of effort, you know, to put on the scowl. I'll definitely be looking forward to when I can play a good guy again."
Performing in an arena with several thousand very vocal fans, putting on the bad guy act is indeed challenging. I asked Molly how she handles the live booing.
"When the crowd is chanting mean things at you, you know you are doing your job, so it's like instant gratification, because these people are responding exactly how they are supposed to be responding. So, it doesn't hurt my feelings. It's actually a compliment," she said. "But really, they are chanting bad things to my character, not to me."
Now that Molly is not your so-called diva anymore, although she would rather be a good guy, she is finding the role a little more relaxing.
"It is a nice break. I don't have to load up on the fake tan, you know, the rub-on stuff. That smells really bad!" she said. "It's nice being low maintenance for a while, without the fake nails and eyelashes. It's so much effort to live up to the expectation of being a diva. My character now is more plain and simple, a nice change of pace."
The Molly off the mat is a little quieter. Working with her fellow wrestlers for eleven hours a day, for days at a time, she tends to spend her free time alone in her hotel room, or journeying about whatever city she is in. Recently, she went to a photography museum in New York, and also a wildlife safari in Nebraska.
Molly also likes to put her "fame" to work for charity, and recently appeared on a celebrity edition of Fear Factor with some other WWE superstars.
"That was fantastic. Even thought I didn't win, $10,000 went to the charity of my choice, which was the Prison Fellowship Ministries. I hope to do more things like that," she said.
For the episode, Molly had to climb into a helicopter from a 20-foot rung ladder while it was flying over the ocean. She tackled that, but it was the second stunt, Blender of Fear that she could not swallow.
"It was a goblet full an oatmeal consistency of really disgusting things that no human should ever have to drink," she cringed. Jeff Hardy went on to win the show.
Molly, who wasn't yet invited to do so, admits she would also like to be involved with Tough Enough, WWE's reality television show on MTV, which puts aspiring wrestlers up against each other, eventually giving a male and female a contract with the WWE.
"I've never been invited to Tough Enough and I'm very upset about that!" she joked. "I really wish that I could host Tough Enough or be a guest on the show, and maybe in season three or four I will be. But, it is not a traditional way of how people get into wrestling. It is great to see what it takes physically to be involved, and it is exciting too to see young people with so much interest and so much heart."
So what can we expect from Molly Holly this year?
"I want to regain the Women's championship! Expect some new highflying moves that will keep you on the edge of your seat!"
And, maybe she will even become blonde again. Because, blondes really do have more fun! I would know
