The finalists opened the show with a group performance of "Rhythm of the Night2 by Corona. It was pretty weird to see this bunch of oddballs singing together but they produced a really good sound.
Star performances came from Usher, and last year's "X Factor winner" Joe McElderry, who gave the first live performance of his new single, Ambitions.
Once the entertainment part of the programme was over, presenter Dermot O'Leary explained that thirteen acts of the sixteen would be saved by the public votes. The act with the least votes would leave the competition immediately and the next two would have to sing for their survival.
Most surprising of all the acts to go through was Wagner. He seems to have a bit of a cult following already though, and may be this year's "comedy" act. Cher Lloyd was also a bit of a surprise, especially considering the amount of bad press surrounding her this week. She may have been saved by the fact that her performance was excellent, even if her vocals weren't.
The bottom three came down to FYD, Katie Waissel and Nicolo Festa. Nicolo had the least votes of all the acts and as such was the first to leave 2010 "X Factor". He said he felt "like crap" being the first to leave but it is not terribly surprising with him not connecting well with the audience. People on Twitter were a little outraged with the decision though.
FYD were the first group to sing for their survival with Rihanna's "Please Don't Stop The Music". They worked the stage with some fierce moves and great vocals. They really sang their hearts out in the hopes of being saved by the judges.
Next, Katie Waissel took to the stage singing "Don't Let Me Down" by The Beatles. The song was boring, but her performance was pretty good.
Simon Cowell, obviously chose to send home Katie home as he is the mentor of the groups. Cheryl Cole, again obviously chose to save her own act and send FYD home. Dannii Minogue looked troubled before making her decision but opted to send home FYD too. Louis Walsh after a little deliberation also chose to send home FYD, meaning Katie Waissel survives for another week.
On a personal note, I got the impression that FYD could have performed like the best boyband in the world and would still have been rejected in favour of Katie. In all fairness, she put everything she had into her song but if the vote had gone down to dead lock, I am inclined to think the result would have been different.
So, "X Factor" week one is out of the way, Nicolo Festa and FYD are going back to their day jobs and Katie Waissel lives on to fill newspaper column inches for another week!

I agree that nothing FYD could have done would have swayed the judges from voting for Katie. Apart from the seemingly fake keyboard playing, she pretty much just stood still and sang "don't let me down" over and over and did the same motions. The rest of the vocal I thought was not worthy of her beating FYD.
Nice recap.
Good review!
Thanks for the write-up!!
Gosh I love this stuff! Keep 'em coming! :)
Sounds exciting:)
