Xbox 360 Users Should Switch to Playstation 3 in 2011

Lee Andrew Henderson
For the past two generations of video game consoles I have been a loyal Sony supporter. The first Playstation seemed like an easy choice over other consoles at the time but when Microsoft introduced the Xbox there was some competition. I stuck with the Playstation and didn't regret owning the Playstation 2, possibly the best video game console of all-time. However, when the current generation of consoles hit stores I decided to take the plunge into the world of Xbox. Once again I made the right choice. I've missed out on a few Playstation 3 exclusives and the membership fee for Xbox Live is dumb, but other than that I've been happy with my Xbox 360. If you look at what's on the horizon though, it's clear it is time to make the move back to Sony.

It first dawned on me that the Playstation 3 was going to have a better 2011 than Xbox 360 when I was writing articles previewing the biggest hits coming out in 2011 for each console. The Xbox 360 has two extremely huge exclusives coming in 2011. Mass Effect was on everybody's short list for video game of the year in 2010 and since the third installment will be the final chapter in this story there is no doubt that Bioware is going to go all out.

The other big Xbox 360 exclusive release is another huge franchise releasing their third installment. Gears of War is sure to be another enjoyable game although the series has not gotten better as the series has gone on in the way that Mass Effect has.

Playstation 3 on the other hand is loaded with exclusives. The game I'm most looking forward to is the return of the Twisted Metal franchise. Uncharted 3 is one of the games with the biggest buzz at the moment. Many gamers are frustrated that Last Guardian did not come out in 2010 but it will still be towards the top of every 2011 preview. In addition to that the PS3 also still has infamous 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Killzone 3.

Playstation also has DC Universe Online, which is not exclusive to Playstation 3 since it is also on the PC, but PS3 is the only console it will available for. Metal Gear Solid Rising will be available for the Xbox 360 but most people still associate it with the Playstation. The PS3 will miss out on Mass Effect 3 and Gears of War 3 but all the other big Xbox 360 releases will be available for PS3 including Arkham City and Marvel vs. Capcom.

If that's not enough to convince you to jump ship to the Playstation 3 then maybe I can provide you another reason. Stephen McGill, Microsoft's director of Xbox Entertainment in the UK, said in his own words, "we've got a brilliant line-up for 2011 but it's ultimately all about Kinect." The reason the number of exclusive games for the PS3 and Xbox 360 are so lopsided is because all of Microsoft's exclusive will be for Kinect.

Maybe you're reading this and you're thinking that's a great thing. If you're interested in Kinect then by all means continue to support it, but a large majority of Xbox 360 users are hardcore gamers and that type of video gamer is probably reluctant to jump aboard the Kinect, a new peripheral that so far has only proved that it is good for dancing games.

Most Xbox 360 gamers are fine with holding a regular video game controller in their hand, sitting on their couch and relaxing while they play a video game. Most of these gamers have been playing that way for their entire life and for some of them that's 20 to 30 years. If dancing is your thing or if you want to try the new technology then pick up a Kinect and enjoy yourself. If you're like me and you just want to sit in your chair and relax after a hard day of work and play some awesome video games then it's time to go buy that Playstation 3.

  • More bombs for PS31/20/2011

Just like 2010 when a bunch of PS3 exclusives game out and bombed in the market, so will 2011 follow suit.
