X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a hack and slash action game developed by Raven Software. As one would expect, this Xbox 360 title is an extension of the much anticipated (by those who haven't seen Logan's origin in cartoons, or comics a bazillion times already) Hollywood film.

I hit the snooze button when it came to getting hyped about this movie. The Magneto flick sounds a bit more intriguing, but that's neither here nor there. X-Men Origins: Wolverine(the movie turned video game) serves as the perfect stage for...A game based upon a movie.

The plot isn't very important. Everybody who walks into Gamestop, wanting this video game like She-Hulk wants that Juggernaut rumor to cease, knows the story means absolutely nothing in a game like this. Commercials advertising this video game dictate what the major draw is.

Who needs deep dialog and engaging subplots when you are in control of a raging berserker, with Ginsu knives sticking out of his fists? That's exactly what this game has to offer. Wolverine hacks, slashes,, slices, dices and even lunges toward enemies with very little effort.

Sadly though, he does not make julienne fries. There may be an external attachment for that...

Unfortunately, the developers had a brain fart or three while making this movie game. You see, they insisted on implemented a few puzzles throughout a few of the levels. I never pegged Wolverine as a highly intelligent hero. When he fails at figuring something out, he usually just starts breaking stuff.

I suppose something interesting needed to be thrown in to break up the repetitiveness. These puzzles are fairly easy(and very redundant), so they don't end up ruining the overall vibe of X-Men Origins. What's the overall vibe of X-Men Origins: Wolverine? Blood.

The amount of crimson dripping within the bowels of this game surprised the heck out of me. the slow motion kill sequences suggest Raven Software had older X-Men fans in mind as their key demographic. Young X fans should probably steer clear of this game, as it will most likely scar them for life.

Seriously, this game is pretty violent. It's obvious this violence is compensating for the lack of depth in play mechanics. It may be over compensating. At it's core, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a mindless button masher, but it's a fun mindless button masher.

Nobody expects games based off movies to be high caliber. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a middle of the road action game. It can't compete with Ninja Gaiden, but holds it's own against games in the Devil May Cry series. I'm impressed, really I am.
