XPERIA X1, Sony Ericsson's First Attempt in Windows Mobile Implementation

Jack Turner
At the end of 2007, mobile phone lovers were surprised by the plan revealed by Sony Ericsson to release the first windows mobile based handset. It's considered as an unusual step because Sony Ericsson has always been faithful to UIQ Symbian OS.

In the middle of 2008, mobile phone called as XPERIA X1 brought a balanced concept of multimedia and office with a further focus on user interface innovation. It is believed the strategy is correct because windows mobile known to have excellent web based software support. The integration of web based technology in windows mobile with the multimedia technology of Sony Ericsson will result into a mobile phone with great abilities.

Windows mobile and UIQ have similarities as operating system based on touch-screen technology. This transition will be relatively easy for previous user of Sony Ericsson business mobile phone. However the similarity is only on the touch-screen technology, if we explore both OS deeper we will discover significant differences.

Unfortunately XPERIA cannot satisfy the need of mainstream mobile phone user. Other than high initial price, according to blog.wired.com , the display interface has unusual design. This will reduce the compatibility with third party software that run on other contemporary windows mobile cell phone. It means that we have to wait a little longer for third party software designed specifically for XPERIA X1.

Furthermore XPERIA seems has not been successful in implementing the Windows mobile OS. In some cases there are crashes between Sony Ericsson traditional values and windows mobile system. It's understandable when we consider XPERIA is Sony Ericsson's first attempt in implementing windows mobile OS.

Window mobile has the advantages for being faster and more stable than UIQ especially in windows mobile version 6.0. It also has superior memory management and better email exchange functions where the push mail feature has close similarities with blackberry email system. Windows mobile is easier to use than UIQ and has excellent compatibility with desktop PC that use windows operating system.

Key Features of XPERIA X1 are as follows:

  • Windows Mobile
  • XPERIA panel
  • HSDPA/HSUPA for up to 7.2 Mbps
  • Unique Keyboard slider design
