Xpress Redi-Set-Go Cooker

Is it Worth the Hassle?

Pat Burroughs
Maybe people get tired of hearing me complain all the time, but if I can save just one person the aggravation I just went through, it's okay if the readers think badly of me.

We went camping earlier in the week. Didn't last but two days in the 100 degree heat before we burned out and came home. It's a new trailer, and we thought it would be up to anything. But after trying to cook in it, we changed our minds. The poor AC just couldn't keep up with the heat outside, much less with added cooking heat inside. Of course in temperatures over 100 degrees, and no shade to park it in, probably no trailer AC could keep up.

The second day, my husband cooked hamburgers on the outside stove that's built into the side of the trailer. We decided it was put there for a purpose--to keep you from trying to cook inside. But it was hard on him being out in the heat that long.

Today the ad for the Xpress Redi-Set-Go cooker was on TV again, at a time when I had sat down for a rest. So I watched it, and was greatly impressed. I thought how nice it would be to have it to take camping, or even to use in the house during this hot weather. So I picked up the phone and called the number, only to get an automated voice. "She" went over the offer as given on TV and I confirmed that was what I wanted to do.

Then she asked for my credit card number. As soon as I gave her my number, she gave ME my address, phone, number and all other information related to my card. I hadn't even given her my name. That unnerved me, to say the least.

Then she started talking about sending a set of recipe cards every month for $9.95 plus $4.95 shipping, and said it could be canceled or returned at any time. I said no. So she repeated the whole deal following, "Before you make up your mind." I had my mind made up when I said no. I said no repeatedly.

Finally she went on to a set of inserts for the cooker. This wasn't just a quick mention--it was a long spiel. I started saying no when she started talking and repeated it during her whole spiel. When she finished, she asked if she should send it, and I said, "NO, NO, NO!"

So she repeated the whole spiel, following, "Before you make up your mind......." Again, I had my mind made up when I said no the first time. So I started punching "0" hoping to get an operator.

It didn't happen. She started talking about sending me a free $50 Wal-Mart gift card if I agreed to some other continuing offer. By then I was getting so frustrated I could have screamed, and did. "NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!"
She continued, "Before you make up your mind......"

I hung up, and went straight to the computer to check on my Visa card. I decided to call and check to see if the charge had been made on the card. The lady at Visa said that so far there appeared to be no charges pending, so she would assume the deal didn't go through since I hung up before finalizing it. I figured that since they had my card number, there would be no stopping them. So now I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I decided I just don't need the cooker that bad. If it ever appears on Wal-Mart's shelves, I might still buy it. I just don't know. But I've learned my lesson. No more dealing with TV offers, either by phone or online. It seems to me that the whole world is eaten up with greed, and tries to take advantage of people's weaknesses.

Meanwhile, if anyone out there has actually bought that product, please let me know what you think of it. I think I'd feel better to find out it's a piece of worthless junk.

Thanks for responding, everyone. The more I read the more glad I am that I didn't wind up buying that piece of junk.

I can relate to all of this but thankfully every time I've phoned these purveyors of TV goods I can't get through. Lucky me. I wonder if I told them I'd send a check would they like that? I am wary of using my Credit Card over the phone unless it is a company I know. I get a nice discount at a local electrical store, so I always go there for appliances. Bought 2 Sunbeam frypans for my brother and I (no teflon) and got AU$18.00 off each one. Happy camping.

I did not click the button but once!

Thanks, Teresa. And you know what? Even Teflon isn't considered safe anymore, as it puts off some sort of bad stuff when it gets really hot. I must have been nuts to even think of ordering one. I learned one thing: if they ask for a credit card number right off the bat, I immediately get out and don't give it.

I too had the same experience with this company. First it was with the telephone ordering system. It is an automated system that kept adding things to the order even thought I practically shouting NO NO NO. I hung up without even getting an order confirmation number and they already had my credit card number. I went directly online and called a customer service number who assured me that the telephone order didn't go through. About two days later I get two of the grills and was indeed billed for two. I sent the one back and called my bank and had them reverse the charges and give me new credit card numbers so that this company couldn't wreak havoc with my bank account.

Then I had the same experience as Nick below. The paint on the bottom plate started bubbling, crackling and peeling. I am pretty sure it was loaded with lead paint from China. It is NOT Teflon coated as the ad states. I had to fight the company tooth and nail, turning them in to the Better Business Bureau of

Thanks, Nick. Hope you and I and others have saved even one person from the frustration of dealing with these people.

As some advise to anyone thinking about ordering this product, don't order it. Below is an email exchange I had with them about the coating peeling off, I'm not impressed with their response or lack of an offer to just replace it:
