Super Size Me -- Not! a Cautionary Tale for the Obese and Obtuse

Drew Jensen
XXXL: Altered State of the Union

U.S. 1994 110m color **

Rated PG for crude language of the schoolyard taunting variety. And a lot of exposed flesh, as in multiple chins and unsightly butt cleavage.

Review: Move over Sleeper. Richard Simmons stars as a man who pulls a Rip van Winkle and falls asleep for twenty years. He awakens to find an America of the near future fatter, flabbier and more sedentary than ever, addicted to flavorless, high-fat food and paying taxes directly to McDonald's which has effectively replaced the federal government. Branded an outlaw for encouraging people to exercise, Simmons runs circles around his pursuers (sometimes quite literally) and manages to save the day with his positive attitude, encouragement and a lot of long-dormant endorphins. A cautionary tale that is both funny and frightening.

Cast: Richard Simmons, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Roseanne Barr, Marlon Brando (as President Ronald McDonald), Wynonna Judd, Luciano Pavarotti, Josh Mostel, Ricki Lake, Dom Deluise, Ned Beatty

Trivia: A confirmed seven different on-set caterers were engaged during the filming of this picture to keep the cast and crew fed. Not consecutively, one after the other but all at one time and throughout production.

Rumor: Richard Simmons was reportedly paid $750,000 for his leading role in the film while Marlon Brando commanded a high seven-figure salary for one afternoon's worth of work in scary clown makeup and a prosthetic nose.

Available in a limited collector's edition Laserdisc complete with an irradiated Happy Meal.
