- Design. Winner: Gmail.
Gmail wins this hands down. There are multiple themes in Gmail and there is only one boring theme in Yahoo. Gmail is not cluttered with ads like Yahoo, but still does have a couple.
2. Features. Winner: Gmail
Gmail wins here too. Gmail has a calendar and an online chat client, Docs and many more features. Yahoo has an online chat client, note pad and a calendar but that's it.
3. Ease of Access. Winner: Gmail
If you go to Yahoo, you have to click on different links to just get to your inbox. If you said remember me on Gmail, it just goes straight to your inbox.
4. Spam Blocker. Winner: Gmail
I signed up to the same phishing site using a Yahoo email account and a Gmail account. All of the spam emails in Gmail went to the Spam folder, some of the spam emails in the Yahoo account leaked into my Inbox.
5. Popularity. Winner: Yahoo.
Yahoo is currently more popular than Gmail. Which means more of your friends may have a yahoo account. Which also means you can chat with them using the Yahoo Chat client.
6. Safety. Winner: Yahoo.
Even though Yahoo doesn't have a good spam filter, Yahoo scans attachments for viruses when you send an email with an attachment and when you try to open an attachment. This is a big feature Gmail is missing.
7.Child Safety. Winner: Gmail
Gmail's spam blocker blocks those suggestive emails from your child. Yahoo tends to get it through to your inbox; you don't want your kids looking at that would you? Gmail wins here.
8. Speed. Winner: Yahoo.
What I did was send an email to one of my Gmail accounts and one of my Yahoo accounts. By a few seconds, my Yahoo account got it first. This isn't really a big difference, but still nice to know that Yahoo is faster.
Overall Winner: Tie.
It really does not matter which one you choose. I personally like Gmail more, but I guess it really depends on what you look for in an email account. You should look at this list to see what one is right for you. If you like using Google, you should look at Gmail. If you use the Yahoo search engine, you should look at Yahoo Mail.

I've always used Yahoo, and like the My Yahoo page. That said, I know that I'll eventually have to switch to Gmail since Yahoo doesn't support Push email and I need that on my smartphone.
Nice overview.
