Yahoo & Twitter: Better Together

It was recently announced that Yahoo and Twitter will be partnering to offer a much better Twitter service to Yahoo's users. As a result of the new relationship, users of the search portal and its other services can expect to have access to wider than current search results based on the social network's messaging service, and convenient access to their own feeds.

Currently, users reaching to Yahoo as a means for searching the Internet only receive a fraction of the content that is available through Twitter tweets via public application programming interfaces (APIs) that make information available to the search portal. Under the new deal, a direct relationship and connection between the giants will be made, meaning search results will contain a much wider array of content and will be based on real-time content and status updates. Updates to the search service to include the content are scheduled to happen as early as Wednesday Feb 23, 2010. It is yet to be seen how that content will and could be organized, such as with other services like Topsy.

Yahoo also stated that it will be making topic related Twitter feeds available on a number of their pages such as news and sports, and the Yahoo homepage making the content easily sharable. Additionally, similar to Facebook updates, another content based integration recently announced by Yahoo, users will be able to directly update their status for their followers directly through a Yahoo account. This is possible by strategically linking the two (Twitter and Yahoo) accounts together.

Coincidentally, this announcement comes only a short time after Google had announced an update to it's social networking strategy with the delivery of Google Buzz. Yahoo is also strategically placing itself in a position where users of social networking services will want to spend more time in one place, making Yahoo the ultimate online destination. The financials of the deal haven't been made public, and Yahoo says that users can expect to see an immediate integration of the two services with further features being made available throughout the remainder of the year.
