Yang Peiyi: The Olympics Didn't Want Her Face -- Just Her Voice

Rosa Hayes
Yang Peiyi was the actual rising star in the opening of the Beijing Olympics, but it wasn't her face that was plastered all over the newspapers and on the television. Chen Qigang, the general music designer of the ceremony, had stated in an interview with a state broadcaster that Yang Peiyi wasn't pretty enough, so they had another pigtailed girl, Lin Miaoke, to lip sing to the music. Chen had said that they wanted a to project the right image, according to AFP.

The lip-synching version of Yang Peiyi has many asking if this is truly the right image that they should have been looking for. Yang Peiyi is an average looking girl with a chubby face and uneven teeth. Yang Peiyi is probably what most girls her age look like but instead of portraying the average girl with the big voice for all to see, they went and added a pretty girl to take the lead and sing in front of a 91,000 capacity audience.

What does Lin Miaoke's lip singing tell other girls who have a big dream of being a singer? This type of performance only builds into the stereo-type that pretty girls are the ones to make it to fame and the ones that aren't so attractive should hang in the towel no matter how big or powerful their voice it.

Some are even going as far as calling this an Olympic hoax since no one would have known about it if it weren't for Chen Oigang. As a proud mother of children with many talents I am often telling them to reach for the stars and the sky is the limits but with people telling kids that they can't be who they want to be unless they are above average looking, it makes me wonder how my kids will survive in a world that is full of things like these.

Yang Peiyi and Lin Miaoke come from different worlds. One is above average looking for her age and the other has a voice that is unreal. Both of these girls possess a talent on their own but the one girl has been shut down since she holds one talent but not the other. If it were my daughter I would have told them that either she sings it live or she doesn't sing it at all and I would hold to my guns.

I don't know what type of parent would allow their child to record their music, but tell them that they can't sing it since they aren't up to par with the standards of the Beijing Olympics. The Beijing Olympics should be ashamed of themselves for allowing something like this to take place no matter how badly they were wanting to show that the Beijing Olympics is going to be the best one yet.

If you lived in China and stuck to your guns, you might be a proud resident of a penitentiary about now, Rosa. But I agree with you that the substitution was sickeningly wrong. I don't think it unique to China though; the same sort of shallow values pervade society here too. As parents, we all have to be concerned about events like this and what they say to our children.

Sad... it's Milli Vanilli China style.

  • House Arrest of Yang Peiyi8/13/2008

Yang Peiyi will be placed under house arrest, along with the Panchen Lamai and the whistle blower of SARS.

China does not seem to believe in the good of humanity. It is more interested in brainwashing and controlling a huge population.

And it still want to claim to be superpower, overtaking USA ??! What the fuck! Just ask any china students in USA whether they want to return back to China after studies. Almost all are afraid their GREEN CARDS in USA will go bust if they return back to their sucky Motherland during OPT!!

This is very dispicable. The Chinese should be ashamed of themselves!

When I was a girl, I would be so shy to sing in front of so many stranger peoples. I wouldn't perform well. But I really could sing so well alone or with people around I knew already. If people love my voice, that was great to me. I was always singing behind sense and others were dancing in front of people. But people knew I was a singer for the group dance performance. I was happy and proud that people liked my voice so much. But I wouldn't feel comfortable to sing in front of so many peoples staring on me, no. I was glad they still gave me chance to show my voice. So what is wrong with this situation? I don't get it. Yang, Peiyi was a very shy girl according to her mentor said. I could understand her. I think it is great. If I were shy, still have such big opportunity to show my voice. I will thank you God so much. If she wanted to perform in future in front of so many people, she will have to overcome her shyness a lot. It takes time. That was a culture difference .

That was the best for her for her age with the shy stage, and people still could recognize her voice. I think it is great. If she wanted to perform in future in front of so many people, she will have to overcome her shyness a lot. That was a culture issue. A lot of Asia are very shy.
