This is the Yankees' 27th overall World Series championship. They now have won more World Series titles than any other MLB team. The St. Louis Cardinals are in second place with 10 overall World Series titles. The Yankees also have appeared in more World Series than any other team. They have made an astonishing 40 World Series appearances. Second place belongs to the Dodgers at 18 appearances.
When old Yankee Stadium debuted in 1923, the Yankees won the 1923 World Series in six games. This year marked the grand opening of the new Yankee Stadium (the price tag is an eye-popping $1.5 billion, incidentally), and the team won the 2009 World Series in six games.
Yankee Hideki Matsui tied a World Series record by driving in six runs in game 6; the record was set by Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson way back in 1960.
In game 5, the Phillies' Chase Utley hit his fifth home run of the 2009 World Series, tying the record set by Reggie Jackson in the 1977 World Series.
Derek Jeter, Andy Pettite, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera have now been on five championship Yankee teams.
The 2009 World Series TV ratings were at the highest levels since 2004.
Yankees backup catcher Jose Molina is the proud owner of two World Series rings. His brothers, Bengie and Yadier, who are also MLB catchers, have one ring apiece.
Congratulations to the world champions New York Yankees. Their victory proves that, even though money cannot buy happiness, it can buy a World Series title. Are you listening, Frank McCourt? As a lifelong Dodgers fan, I must admit that I would have preferred to be writing about the Boys in Blue winning the 2009 World Series title, but there's always next year.

Post a CommentHartley,...must you? I guess there must be some reportage on this sporting event. I am trying not to hate but as you pointed out in your article it appears that the Yankees 'purchased' this coveted championship. Bitterly I say, it took them long enough. I am a Cub fan and proud of it. Good piece. Thanks.
Does anybody like the Yankees? I know it is somehow "uncool", which I honestly don't get.
Did I mention how much I hate the Yankees. Still, congratulations are in order. They deserved it...
