Yard Sale: Tips To Make it a Success

With spring upon us, it's only a matter of time before you start to clean out your house and want to get rid of unnecessary things. Instead of just throwing everything out, why not try to make a buck and have a yard sale. There are some simple things that you can do that can help make your sale a successful one.

First off, plan the date wisely. Don't hold it on a day when you know that everyone will be busy doing something else, particularly if there's some big event in town going on or a holiday that people tend to spend with their families.

Advertising. The people need to know about it. It doesn't matter if you have some of the greatest things at cheap prices, if nobody knows about it, it won't sell. Place an ad in a local paper. Hang signs up at area businesses (with their permission of course) place signs randomly around town (if your town allows that) Word of mouth is good too. Over the course of a day you talk to a lot of people, probably more than you realize so just mention the sale.

Make sure the items that you intend to sell are in the best condition possible. For example, clean them before setting them out. It will make them look a lot better. Nobody wants to buy something that is already dirty.

Make sure that all items are priced. If people are browsing through things, they probably won't take the time to find you and ask a price. They'll just opt not to buy it. You'll lose out on money this way.

If you are selling clothes, find a way to hang it. It will make it look neater, and it will be easier for people to look through it. They won't be willing to dig through a pile of clothes dumped on the ground.

Keep your cashbox safe. You'd be surprised how many people will try to take off with it.

Use the boyscout motto. Be prepared. Try to think of everything that you will need beforehand and set up the night before, if possible, or at least before the sale is supposed to begin. Don't try to set things up as people are arriving.

Finally, remember that you are dealing with customers so be friendly and helpful. Try to bargain with people. A smile and greeting when they arrive can go a long way with some people.
