Yarn Shopping on Vacation: 5 Tips for the Traveling Knitter

Getting the Most Out of Unfamiliar Yarn Shops

Sam Carter
One of the pleasures of knitting is shopping for yarn. Whether you're looking for something specific or just browsing your favorite fibers and colors, yarn shopping can be a fun and relaxing experience.

For many knitters, the local yarn shop is as familiar as the grocery store. But what about taking your knitting on vacation? There are many yarn shops around the world that are worth checking out. So how do you make the most of the shops that are local to your vacation destination?

Seek Out Shops

Before heading off on your vacation, consider doing a quick Internet search for yarn shops in the area you're traveling to. Google Maps is a great way to find what you're looking for. Simply load up the site, search "yarn near [your destination]", and see what pops up. Alternatively, some knitting magazines have lists of shops in various states, and many yarn manufacturers list retail locations on their websites.

Browse Before You Buy

If the shop you want to visit has a website, check it out! That way, you can get a feel for the selection available at the shop before you head off on your vacation. Some shops allow you to order directly from them via their websites, some list the brands they sell, and some simply have a one-page Internet presence. If the latter is the case and you have questions, don't hesitate to pick up the phone and give the shop a call.

Be Adventurous

When you're out of town, try looking for yarns you don't usually buy or know you can't get at home. Does the shop you found on vacation have a yarn you've been dying to try? Pick up a skein or two! Browse new arrivals. See if there are selections from local fiber farms, spinners, or hand-dyers. Save the yarns you know and love for the next trip to your local yarn shop and enjoy the varied selection at your vacation spot.

Ask Questions

It's not unusual to become disoriented in an unfamiliar shop. Since yarn shops tend to be independent, layouts can differ greatly from place to place. And sometimes the sheer amount of yarn can be overwhelming! If you can't find what you're looking for or would like more information on an unfamiliar yarn, feel free to ask questions. After all, yarn shops want to sell yarn. Chances are that the staff will be more than willing to help you and direct you toward yarn to suit your knitting needs.

Enjoy the Company

Many yarn shops hold "knit nights" or similar social events on a regular basis. These gatherings are a good way to meet other knitters and have an evening of relaxed, social knitting. Find out if the shop near your vacation destination has one of these gatherings and, if you're inclined to go, inquire whether visitors are welcome. Chances are you'll have a great time with a new group of knitters and make some fun vacation memories in the bargain.

Vacations are great opportunities to check out new yarn shops; or, if you don't have a local shop, to get a feel for what one is like. Differing yarn selection, knitting nights, and the experience of a new yarn shopping location are all good reasons to check out yarn shops while on a trip. So consider check out the shops that are local on your next vacation. You may be pleasantly surprised by what you find!
