It really didn't take much convincing. Bear seemed lonely after losing Elvis. We all seemed a bit lonely without him. I've loved animals all my life. My brothers and sisters have even always teased me for having a rather strange connection with animals. When my son said all he wanted was a big Yellow Lab, I knew he needed one. Elvis was a big boy so it was really important to my son and I that our new puppy would be a big boy too. I made sure to leave Jacob with doubts as to whether we'd be getting another dog or not and on the sly I started checking ads in the papers and on the Internet.
As with most things, Jacob's birthday came along faster than I'd expected. I'd found plenty of Yellow Labrador puppies , but none that seemed extra large. Then I'd find a big chunky puppy but only females. Panic was starting to set in as the birthday approached. Then, luck set in. Three days before my son's birthday I found an ad for Large Box head Labradors. I called the number and found out they had three boys. The owner lived an hour away so I called my niece and she took the ride out with me to see the puppies. I told Jacob that we were going shopping and never let on to him where we were really off to.
When we got to the owners house we found the dogs to be in excellent condition. The parents were both on the property and both were exceptionally large. They were built both strong and tall. I knew just by the parents that the puppies would be beautiful. The owner came out and let my niece and I into a gated area with the puppies. They were so beautiful. The three yellow boys all had gorgeous blue green eyes. I was overwhelmed with trying to decide which one was the right one. They were just too perfect in every way. I chose one and just as we were about to leave the pen, my niece said wait. She liked another one better and she picked him up and handed him to me. I looked at her and then the puppy and that was it.
The drive home was so much fun. We were excited and he was puppy stinky . He wasn't used to the car or being without his brothers so he whined a bit. When we got close to home, I called my son. He was at a friends house and I knew I'd have to be crafty to get him to come home. I told him I'd been out at a yard sale and picked up some games for him. It wasn't as hard as expected. I had just gotten home and let the puppy onto the grass when my son pulled up in front of the house. As soon as he got out of the car he saw his new dog. His smile was absolutely priceless.
We live in the city so in no time at all half the block was coming out and over to see our new puppy. Jacob didn't even have to think more than a minute before naming him Mojo. The name fits him perfectly. We were all instantly in love. We took Mojo out to the backyard to meet his new brother, Bear. Bear wasn't thrilled. Mojo was so small compared to Bear at the time so we watched them closely. Bear didn't take too long to adjust but in all honesty he still wasn't thrilled after a couple months. It's a much different story now. They've grown to become great friends and brothers. Mojo does a fine job at keeping Bear healthy and young.
At one year old Mojo weighed one hundred pounds. He's not fat at all, pure muscle. He's tall for a Yellow Labrador and it costs him. He's had trouble with growth plates but he's a trooper. He's slept with my son every night and it's one of the most beautiful sights in the world when I look in on them. Mojo is a character and completely in love with Jacob. He loves to fetch and loves to play hide and seek. He was a bit of a pain as a puppy because he never came close to sleeping through the night. That's all different now. He's turned into exactly the dog my son needed.
Jacob was involved in a pretty serious car accident not long ago. He suffered some pretty serious injuries and we were all very frightened. He was in the hospital for a week and His father and I were there with him the whole time. God blessed us and he's going to be fine. It was a very trying week. Getting home sounded so good to all of us. When we came through the door Bear and Mojo were there waiting for us. All Jacob wanted to do was get into bed with his big yellow Mojo and rest. That's exactly what they did. Mojo lay beside Jacob and there was no way he was going to move a muscle. He knew his boy was hurt and needed him. He did a perfect job of snuggling and guarding his boy.
There's been at least several times that my son has said that Mojo was the best present he ever got. I've always believed every boy should get to own and raise a dog. When I see the love my son has for Mojo, I have no doubts. Mojo is great. He's a mess in so many ways. I've lost more socks than I could count and more than a few pair of underwear to his love of chewing. It's all worth it. The holes in my yard and the scratches on the back door from when he was a puppy, are all worth it. We love you Mojo !

Post a CommentI think every kid in the world should have the joy%2C at least once%2C of taking care of and interacting with a dog. I know there are people out there that would disagree%2C but there%27s just something about seeing a kid and a dog together that makes everything seem right. Well done Linda %3A%29
