There is a website where you can choose to never receive another phone directory. These directories show up on our doorstep or curbside every year. Yet many people never look at them. So they sit around gathering dust. Then there is the problem of getting rid of them. It's pretty easy in some communities who offer curbside recycling. In others they just get thrown into the trash, or you have to go find someplace that collects recyclables.
Most of the phone numbers you might need are already stored in your cell phone. If you want to look up a new number, it only takes a few minutes in an on line search to find what you need. Phone directories are made from recycled paper, but unfortunately only about 20% of the directories get recycled. That means they are probably ending up in landfills. What a waste (no pun intended).
The Kansas City Star reported that the opt out website offers a single place where you can opt out of phone directories in your area. In my area, for instance, there are four different directories that are delivered. On the opt out website itself you enter your zip code and the site shows you which directories you are privileged to receive.
Once you register you will receive an email that will give you a password and a link where you can log in to complete the opt out process. When you log back in you can change your password to something that is familiar to you, just in case you might decide some day to opt back in. You will be able to opt out of all the directories in your area or just a couple of them. It's an easy process, and once complete you'll never have to deal with the phone directory again.
I haven't used a phone directory in years. I was happy to find a way to not have them delivered anymore. I chose to opt out of all of them. I'll be in trouble if my internet ever fails. Hope I made the right decision.

Post a CommentFinally - thanks for reporting this, I will opt out right away :)
So glad I'm not the only one who does not want or use a telephone directory.
in SF we get 3!!! what a waist
Thank you for this one....big time!
Thanks, we have FOUR (!) phone books now, geez, no end in sight! cheers for the info
The Yellow Pages around here are a big joke.
Oh, I am so happy to get this news! I detest phone books, you can never find waht you need in them, you can't find a decent place to store them and we get three or four every year.
I'm thinking they'll soon be obsolete since most people look online. I didn't realize we had the option of opting out.
