Yellowstone National Park Lodging: A Review of the Frontier Cabins at Canyon Village

Lyn McCallister
On a recent summer trip to Yellowstone National Park, I had the opportunity to stay at a Frontier Cabin at Canyon Village for 3 nights. This article will review the cabin and the amenities within the immediate area to help you decide if a stay in one of these cabins is the right lodging choice for you.

Frontier Cabins at Canyon - What do they look like?
The cabins at canyon are simple and rustic, but they do provide a comfortable place to rest your head. You can book 2 double beds or 2 single beds. I booked a double bed room for 2 adults and 2 children. If you are traveling with a baby, there is enough space in the cabin to set up a pack-n-play.

The room had a small writing desk with chair and a heater. There is no air conditioning in the cabins, but you probably won't need it as you'll be touring around Yellowstone during the day. At nights, even in summer, the temperatures get cold so you'll be grateful for the heater.

The sink is conveniently located outside the bathroom. The bathrooms in these cabins are quite small. The shower - no bathtub - is very compact but served us adequately. There is also a toilet in the bathroom.

During the day, we did keep several of our windows open to help ventilate the room.

The cabins have electric outlets but do not contain telephones or televisions. We found that Verizon provided good cell phone service in the park whereas T-Mobile did not so check with your cell phone provider before you depart to see if you have coverage. There are pay phones located in Canyon Village if you should need to call someone.

Canyon Village Amenities - Food, Stores, Gas, Campgrounds
You'll find restaurants, gas, groceries, and gift food stores within a short walking distance of the cabins at Canyon. Canyon Village can become quite crowded later in the day so I highly recommend just parking at your cabin and walking up to the village.

There are 3 main food options at Canyon: a sit down restaurant, a deli, and a cafeteria. Although the food is not gourmet, you will find decent options at each location for various budget points. Choose the deli or cafeteria if you are on a limited budget or have small children. Choose the restaurant if you would prefer to sit down and have table service.

Hint: You can order a child's portion at the cafeteria for a smaller price. If you have a small appetite or want to split a meal between several children, this hint will save you a few dollars.

If you want to preview a dining menu at Canyon, you can find PDF versions of the menus available online at Travel Yellowstone.

Located near the cabins, you can find the Canyon campground. We enjoyed walking over to the campground to enjoy the summer ranger talks. Be sure to bring bug spray and a flashlight!

The Frontier cabins at Canyon are a comfortable, budget-friendly lodging option within Yellowstone National Park. I enjoy staying in the Canyon area due to its central location in the park as well as its proximity to wildlife viewing opportunities.

If you are traveling with children to Yellowstone, check out my companion article on advice for keeping them entertained and excited during your trip. Take it slow and you'll see more wildlife, particularly in the northeastern section of the park. Enjoy your stay at the Frontier cabins at Yellowstone National Park!

I love Yellowstone, and I have heard good things about these cabins from some friends, and you as well. I may look into staying here once I can ever get my family out there. Thanks!
