Yerba Mate Morning

Alicia Angel
Squinting for the daybreak blaze, I see
Two small figures dashing, oh no, in my vicinity
As quick as morning fog will allow
My defense is raised, albeit shallow
Awake, awake, -- the shrill words are said
Sanctuary breached -- ripped from my head
Goaded, prodded and poked -- I surrender
Standing, but how? My mind won't render
One headlight, I smile, not the song
A single eye, must look so wrong
To the kitchen, a voice compels me
Persistent and chipper, juice mommy
juice?
shake
cup? cup
shake
turn, turn
pour
turn, turn
return
My turn, thoughts of mate latte assuage the dullness
Massage my mind in motion, two headlights more or less
boil
measure
more for good measure
brew
strain
vanilla soy
honey
ice
Nice. Forget to sip. soak in clarity
Overdose? Too hard? It's a rarity
Haze retreats, lenses find focus, my hands seek out a chore
Too ready to savor the day, energized to the core
