Yes, League of Women Voters, We Want to Say the Pledge of Allegiance

Linda Louise Johnson
At the beginning of a recent League of Women Voters Candidate Forum, featuring a debate between Rep. Melissa Bean and Joe Walsh, candidates for 8th Congressional District of Illinois, an audience member called out a question: "Are we going to say the Pledge of Allegiance?" "No we are not!" was the adamant answer from the moderator for the debate. When asked why not, her explanation was that "It has never been a part of our program." But the audience had a different program in mind. People jumped to their feet, placing hands over hearts, and began saying the Pledge of Allegiance together. The clip(linked here) doesn't say what happened after that, but comments to the post mentioned that the moderator did in fact join in.

Certainly, the presence of the American flag, and pledging allegiance to it are appropriate in any setting, but how much more so at a political rally, a campaign meeting, or a debate whose purpose is to reveal how voting for a certain candidate will affect America's future. It was not surprising that the audience expected to say the Pledge of Allegiance. It is a bit surprising that the debate moderator did not want to even consider it.

Comments on the League of Women Voter's Candidate Forum clip:

"Didn't the moderator take longer stating why she felt the Pledge was unnecessary than the crowd did to actually say it?"

"It was a public gathering for a US congressional debate. That's enough of a reason right . . there."

"For a room full of U.S. citizens to stand up, spontaneously, against the wishes of an obviously hostile "moderator", and deliver the Pledge, fills my heart with pride and joy."

If you think seeing a crowd stand in unison and say the Pledge without coaching or introduction--after being told not to-- is a beautiful thing, check out this clip of the audience saying the Pledge..

Yeah....we win. Just love your godly patriotism. What a gift you have. PLEASE, oh please forgive me for not commenting more on your work. I am so sorry. Presently I am attending seminary for a masters, pastor of a church, and working (while riding a bike, chewing gum...LOL). I appreciate you and your work and your comments so much and thank you with apologies from me. I only publish about every 3 weeks now. God bless.

I remember when I lived in the UK and people would ask me to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. It always got a big laugh.

Pledging allegiance has never gone out of style where I live, and enough people still sing the national anthem at ball games that you can hear the voices over the music. As it should be. Everywhere. Thanks for this super story!

Good for that audience. In school, we always listened to the Star-Spangled Banner with our hand over our hearts and then said the Pledge.

Excellent! We have to literally stand up for our rights as Americans these days.

Hadn't heard this but, yes, the moderator should've said "Let's do it!"
