Yes Man - a Film Review

Greg Seltz
Please acknowledge that I critique the aforementioned title, and base the associated review off personal opinion. However, I personally believe that perspective is responsible for separating the individual opinion, and hence provides for contradictive views. This film, in particular, maintains a positive review in my opinion. If you have yet to see the comedy, Yes Man, featuring Jim Carrey, I definitely recommend it.

The Summary

Solitary recluse, Carl Allen, refrains from experiencing life. His tedious routine involves a repetitive pattern of work and relaxation at home. However, though his friends constantly insist his return to a social atmosphere, Carl repeatedly refuses via lies and false remarks. However, after interaction with an old acquaintance, Carl is informed about a "Yes" seminar that introduces similar individuals to a more satisfying, experienced life. The motivational speaker, Terrence, encourages Carl to answer questions via "Yes," instead of no. Naturally, Carl is initially hesitant until he spontaneously meets Allison after answering "Yes" to a chain of irrelevant events. Eventually, the film depicts Carl as a reformed "Yes Man." Various scenes involve a once conflicted Carl now bungee jumping, learning Korean, participates in a Persian dating website, and partaking in social events. Towards the conclusion, Allison is informed of Carl's recent motivational rehabilitation and assumes Carl is simply saying "Yes" to personal relationship questions. Of course, the two reconnect and establish an honest relationship, and Carl remains positively affected by his choice of actions.

The Cast

Jim Carrey, who is constantly critiqued on his performance and repetitive nature, portrays the role of Carl. His newfound love interest, Allison, is played by Zooey Deschanel. The constantly antagonizing friends are Bradley Cooper and That 70's Show's, Danny Masterson. Terrence Stamp is the motivational speaker, Terrence.

My Opinion

Naturally, the aforementioned critiques are quite accurate. And though this film fails to deliver anything new, Jim Carrey remains talented and still manages to obtain a few comedic performances. I admit that I, personally, enjoyed the random elements of the film. Though the overall storyline was predictable, various scenes provide hilarious comedic relief and sometimes, heartfelt sympathy. The supporting characters are quite bland, but still prove beneficial to the role of Carl and his positive reformation to say "Yes." The film delivers a more satisfying result compared to previous Carrey films, and was considerably successful at the box office. In my opinion, this film will fail to present any Oscar nominations, obviously, but proves fun for the entire family. Forget the critics, see the film!
