My little boy kept asking me, "Really, Mommy? You REALLY like Elmo?" He laughed and laughed telling me that Elmo was for babies.
I remember when I was about 13 or so Sesame Street had their 20th anniversary. My best friend & I were so thrilled to see some of our favorite characters like Bob, Burt & Ernie & Grover. I almost cried when they talked about Mr. Hooper dying. He played a store owner on the show from 1969-1983. I was 8 when he passed away so I never saw the show about him dying till I was a teen. I choked up seeing seeing the adults in the show explain to Big Bird how Mr. Hooper died and wouldn't come back.
As a teen I was excited to baby sit because I could watch it again and not feel ashamed. It was so fun sitting with a group of kids and seeing them enjoy skits I remembered watching!
So when I had my first child at age 20 (I know I was young I got married at 18 & I proud to say that I am still married 13yrs later) I couldn't wait to introduce her to Sesame Street! But sadly she didn't get into to the show. By the time my 2nd child came around in 1999 there was even more TV shows for children. My 2nd daughter fell in love with Bear in the Big Blue House (another Jim Henson show) & Dora the Explorer. I tried my hardest to get her to watch Sesame Street. But no such luck she'd beg for "Bear".
My son was the same way. I couldn't believe it. What child would pass up Sesame Street? Talking to other parents I found out the same thing would happen in their house. Their children would rather Blue's Clues, Dora the Explorer or Barney.
So many TV shows are made for children these days. I was born in 1975 and back then well I remember us only having maybe 5 channels to pick from in those really early days. PBS was the only one that really had shows for kids. Then along came Nickelodeon with their shows for kids and it just kept on spreading.
The show has really changed from the one I remember. It seems these days they hardly even count up to 20. I personally feel it is way to commercialized. You just don't feel the connection with the characters. They have had to remake the show to keep up with all the other children's shows. I think that is maybe one reason adults who remember the "old" Sesame Street are disappointed with what they see now.
But Sesame Street does live on in many of us. I have heard stars say how know they have finally made it in show business after being asked to be a guest on the show. I heard an actor from Sesame Street say it is funny to see some famous rock star turn into a little kid again. They see the set and get so excited seeing the famous set & sit on the stairs, meet the puppets and sing their favorite Sesame Street songs.
This past summer on America's Got Talent a man named Terry Fator, a ventriloquist was honored by singing with Kermit the Frog. Tears came to my eyes as heard them sing "You've Got A Friend." Just seeing Kermit brought more fond memories of Sesame Street.
You can see the now famous clip on YouTube! Click here to see it you'll also some other famous Muppets too!
So yes I am 32 and I still love Sesame Street!

Post a CommentI so remember when Mr. Hooper died. My mom and I BOTH cried!
I have 2 sons (18mnths and 7) We sit and watch Sesame Street together when we can. My seven year old doesnt love it, but it makes me feel better knowing he is watching something quality instead of crap.
My daughter enjoys Sesame Street. She loves Elmo and I enjoy watching it with her and remembering how much I enjoyed the show as a child.
Great article! My kids love Sesame Street, especially Elmo and Big Bird. They love Disney as well, but they also love many of the shows I favored as a child. I love seeing them get excited over the same things I did. You're right about Sesame Street changing. Some changes are good, and others, not so.
My daughter and I were just talking about Sesame Street today. I told her about how I watched the show until I was 10 years old. There is just something magical about that show, and I hope it never disappears off the air! Nice article.
Sesame Street huh? I've always been more of a fan of Fraggle Rock and The Muppet Show. But, great article.
