Yiayia's Beef Stroganoff

Stoganoff in a Tomato Based Sauce

David Lindberg
I was cleaning up some old papers in our home office today and came across an old wrinkled paper that had my favorite recipe for Beef Stroganoff on it. It was how my first wife's mother, Yiayia, (Greek for Grandmother) made it. She is still in good health, but doesn't cook anymore. She was a fantastic cook and she would make this recipe for my birthday, just about every year. I was her biggest fan of her cooking! This is the only recipe that I have ever seen that made Beef Stroganoff with a tomato based sauce rather than the brown gravy sauce and it's best on white rice. I used to make this myself because I loved it so much, but I lost this recipe for quite a while, so I'll be having this in the next few days and remembering how Yiayia always made it for me. By the way...how lucky can one man be to remarry and find my best friend ever, and her mother is Italian and also a fantastic cook. I am now her number 1 fan!

I don't eat a lot of red meat either, but it still looks delicious. :-)

    Who knows..perhaps families say it differently...as far as I know..it's pronounced as a capital I and AH, so it's Y (I) Y AH

I think it's like: "Ya Ya". Right?

I don't have a lot of these types of recipes, but I can probably find a few more. They are more so memory recipes. BTW, I didn't really give the phonitic sound for Yiayia...if you're interested. It sounds like Yi Yah. Thanks for all your comments and reading.

Sounds wonderful. We eat very little meat but I think if I increased the peppers and substituted roasted red peppers and used a smaller amount of meat, that it would fit well into our diet. (I'm still trying to use up all the red peppers we grew last summer.)
