Yo Soy Latina! The Play from Writer Linda Nieves Powell
What is a Latina Supposed to Look Like, Act like or Sound Like?
Wearing the many hats of accomplished theater writer, producer, and film director; Linda Nieves Powell knows all about the controversies of being Latina in today's society. Inspired by others and her own personal experiences, she has brought attention to stereotypes within our own Latino sisters. Does the typical Latina have dark eyes, dark hair and olive skin? Should we all be categorized in one word when we come from different backgrounds and countries? Are Cubanas stuck up? Are all Puerto Ricans on government assistance or on drugs? Are all Dominicans dark skinned or lazy? Are all Colombians and Mexicans drug dealers? "Yo Soy Latina" tackles these sterotypes and many more while taking you through an emotional discovery. Linda Nieves Powell's, Yo Soy Latina will make you laugh and cry, but best of all it will empower you to be proud of being Latina in the package you came in.
In 1995, Linda began her multimedia entertainment company, Latino Flavored Productions. As a woman that is Latina, Linda faced many obstacles but continued to push forward and has proven to excel beyond her expectations.
To date, Latino Flavored Productions has performed Yo Soy Latina Off Broadway and in over 100 colleges and universities including Harvard, MIT, Brown and Duke and for Corporate Diversity programs. Linda has been recognized by many for creating positive images for Latina woman earning herself the 2005 Imagen Award and named one of the top 100 Influential Hispanics in Hispanic Business Magazine. Linda has also appeared in many popular TV shows like Univision Noticias, The Roof, La Conexion, Urban Latino TV, Telemundo Noticias, and Primer Impacto and is a published writer with articles in popular magazines such as Latina magazine and Estylo magazine.
Latino Flavored Productions has a creative, entertaining way to deal with issues that affect our community. Other Latino Flavored productions to enjoy are Mimi's Portrait, which is about a 10 year old Latina that is trying to find her place in a black and white world. Another production, Vinnie, the PR from Bensonhurst, is about a young Puerto Rican guy who is passing himself up as Italian because he is in love with an Italian girl. Linda also debut The Latina Sex Project for Hispanic Heritage month 2006. Through humor, and sometimes tears, these plays have enlightened us to become more united despite our differences sharing positive messages through the arts.
