Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years. Its roots are in India, but it has long been a meditative and health discipline practiced in cultures the world over. Essentially, it is the practice of gentle stretching, strength building, and energizing of the body through the holding of certain postures called Asanas, while concentrating on the breath. Most practitioners will begin their practice with a centering and end with a final relaxation and meditation.
Although many practice yoga on their own in their home, using audiotape or videotape/DVD instruction, following along with instructors on television programs (some programs are offered on Public Broadcasting System channels or fitness channels), or by simply practicing independently by taking themselves through the Asanas they feel would be most suited to their current needs, most people find the instruction and attention to form and posture provided in yoga classes to be the most beneficial. In class, the instructor is available to address and correct small details of the students' poses that will help them to get the most from their practice. Yoga by instructor also ensures the students will experience a balanced routine, with all parts of the body worked and the appropriate counter stretches included to gain flexibility and strength and avoid overuse or injury.
