Yoga Practice for the Relief of Scoliosis Pain

Derek M.
Scoliosis, a chronic condition where the spine is curved at an unnatural way, is a painful and often debilitating disease. Studies show that strengthening and lengthening the muscles of the back can provide some relief to Scoliosis patients. One of the most effective ways to do this is through a carefully structured and monitored yoga program. After checking with a doctor to ensure the patient is capable of practicing yoga, working with a qualified yoga instructor to develop a suitable program can alleviate some of the worst symptoms of yoga.

Several traditional yoga poses have been shown to aid in a patience range of movement when practiced correctly. It is vital to know which poses are suitable for a patient with Scoliosis, as some can actually cause more damage then help.

The Corpse pose is a simple posture. Lying flat on the back, in a relaxed pose, rest the arms at the side, palms facing down and allow the legs to lie naturally. The knees will be slightly turned out. Hold this pose for several seconds while breathing naturally. Tension will be alleviated.

The Cat Stretch is an excellent posture for lengthening back muscles. Place the hands and knees on the floor, while keeping a flat back. Hands should be placed directly under the shoulders and the fingers should be splayed. Knees should be placed directly under the hips and the head and neck should be loose and natural. On an exhale, arch the back toward the ceiling while tucking the chin to the chest as if looking at the navel. Tuck the tailbone underneath and hold. Release back to starting posture.

The Wind Release Posture starts in Corpse Pose. Inhale while bending one knee. Placing the hands below the knee, draw the leg upward towards the chest. The opposite leg should remain flat on the floor. On an exhale, draw the forehead to the knee, hold and release. Repeat the sequence with the opposite leg. This posture strengthens the core and back while releasing tension in the lower back.

The Palm Tree Pose, a total body stretch, begins by standing with arms at the side and the weight evenly distributed. Interlocking the fingers in front, raise the arms over the head, turning them so the palms point upwards. Stretch upwards with the entire body and hold.

Perhaps the best position for relief of lower back pain is the Fish Posture. Lie supine with the knees bent and arms to the side. Arching the back as is comfortable, raise off the floor by pushing with the elbows. If possible, tilt the head back, resting the crown on the floor. Breathe in and out while holding the pose for a minute if possible.

These simple yoga postures will strengthen the back while lengthening the muscles. Increased flexibility will lead to extended range of motion. With a doctor's permission, a yoga program can help alleviate some of the pain associated with Scoliosis. Careful and consistent practice of yoga positions is an excellent treatment options for Scoliosis patients.
