Yogic Treatment of Asthma

Asthma is spreading very rapidly among people due to high pollution rates around the world. Asthma patients experience breathlessness and struggle to breathe in and out. In severe cases, the life of the patients becomes miserable making the patient almost invalid. Such condition is termed as Emphysema. Asthma is mainly a disorder of the bronchioles.

The contraction of bronchioles disturbs the normal ratio of inhaling and exhaling. Asthma is a widely prevalent disease of the present time, affecting the young, old, and even the children in some extreme cases. Unfortunately, there are no medicines available to cure asthma in allopath. All the allopathic medicines of asthma help to control it but do not cure it completely. However, there is a yogic treatment available for asthma that can cure asthma completely within a period of around three months.

The yogic treatment to cure asthma comprises of three main aspects. The first is to practice pranayama, second is to practice few selected yogaasanas, and the third is following some basic guide rules in life. The practice of Ujjayee pranayama cures asthma. Ujjayee pranayama can be performed in standing position as well as in lying position. It is better to perform Ujjayee pranayama in lying position as its practice in standing position is quiet strenuous and the person can even fall down losing his balance while practicing Ujjayee pranayama in standing position.

The procedure of performing Ujjayee pranayama in lying position consists of four steps. The first step is to exhale air through your mouth continuously and speedily with force. The abdominal area must contract during this exhalation. The second step is to inhale through both the nostrils slowly without any haste, keeping your body loose. Hold this position for around five to six seconds. Try to bring the toes of both the legs together and stretch them forward, pulling your stomach muscles inside during period of this six seconds. The final step is to exhale through the mouth with speed and force as explained in step one. Relax your full body after you complete the exhalation through your mouth. During this rest period, the inhaling and exhaling may be done normally through both the nostrils. The main benefits of this Ujjayee pranayama are that it purifies the lungs internals and activates and energizes all the cells of lungs. The holding of air for around five to six seconds in your body would absorb more impurities from your body and would throw them out during final step of exhalation.

The yogasanas like Tara asan, Simha asan, Sarvang asan, and Matsy asan can be of great help in curing asthma. The detailed procedure to perform this asanas can be easily obtained from any standard books of yoga. The asthma patients should follow some basic guide lines pertaining to food habits. They must eat their dinner at least two hours before going to sleep. They should never eat to their full capacity any time. They should eat very slowly and chew their food properly. They should never consume water while having their meals. The water should be consumed after around half an hour of completing their meals. They must consume ten to twelve glasses of water daily and should avoid hot spices, red pepper, and the pickles. Their intake of tea/coffee should also not exceed two cups per day. They should never take bed tea in the morning. The asthma patients must stop all tobacco products immediately. Such patients must avail sleep of at least six to eight hours per day regularly. The asthma patients are also advised to take baths daily either with cold or hot water depending upon the season and must rub their complete body with rough towel.

The above three steps program certainly cures asthma completely within a period of around three to four months. I have myself cured many such asthma patients using this simple procedure in my long career as the yoga instructor. I would strongly recommend all asthma patients to follow this simple procedure to get their asthma cured completely without any allopathic medicines that may have harmful side effects.
