The first and foremost precaution to cure osteoporosis is to get you tested for Osteoporosis. You must take up the test without any delay if you are female, and having more than 65 years of age. Younger women also should get tested if they have entered menopause and are having any of the additional risk factors like; a family history of frequent fractures or bone injuries, taking thyroid medicines, Having severe diabetes, liver, or kidney disease, smoking, and excessive drinking of alcohol. The men performing no other exercises except cycling may also get them tested for Osteoporosis. One study have revealed that the men who always are involved in non-weight bearing exercises could be at a higher risk for developing Osteoporosis if they do not carry out any other physical exercise.
The test is very simple in nature and is totally invasive. The bone density scans are taken to measure the bone strength. The unit of this bone strength is called T score. Normal bone density is indicated by T score of more than one. The patients are diagnosed for osteoporosis if their T score is less than -2.0, and the acute osteoporosis begins at T score below -2.5. The test may be required to be performed every two years to keep a close watch on your T score value. Now comes the most important aspect as to how to avoid osteoporosis and how to treat it.
It would be the best if we were able to find out the stage of preosteoporosis, making it easier to treat. The keys to avoid osteoporosis are summarized herewith. Stop smoking completely without any delay. Even smoking couple of cigarettes per day can be hazardous to you. Never consume alcoholic drinks in excess. The limit can be at the most two drinks on any given day. If you are taking any medicines for thyroid, arthritis, asthma, or any hormones balance, make sure that you take the appropriate doze of these medicines as prescribed to you. Regular exercise is the next factor. You must perform high impact activities like running, jumping, and aerobics. Weight lifting can be the best if you have joint pain as it benefits the bones. One may start taking calcium in form of tablets based on your doctor's advice. Calcium deficiency is the main cause of osteoporosis. Your food is very vital for avoiding osteoporosis. Make sure to give your bones all the nutrients needed like calcium and vitamin D, so that they remain strong. The items like milk, cheese, yogurt, tofu (processed with calcium sulphate), calcium rich juices, and suitable external intake of vitamin D capsules are the most suitable for the patients of osteoporosis.
The treatment of Osteoporosis, once confirmed, is slightly difficult and may not fetch quick results. The treatment consists of calcium/vitamin D capsules and some pain relievers in case of excessive pain in the bones or joints. However, yoga has some specific ways to treat Osteoporosis. The most important aspect is to maximize oxygen content in the blood. This would make your bones stronger. Doing deep breathing exercises for around an hour or so daily can do this. The simple technique to do is sitting in lotus pose or with crossed legs, keeping your eyes and mouth fully closed, start taking slow, deep breathe, watching with your mind the passage of air as it enters the nose and gets out. Try to feel the temperature difference between the inhaling and exhaling. Think constantly that you are being cured of your osteoporosis gradually. This positive thinking will give a lot of help to get cured. Two such sessions of half an hour each shall help tremendously. Such sessions can be also done during your travel time or while sitting idle at any time during the day. All the patients must take precautions not to fall down while walking or doing some physical activities.
There are around ten million patients of Osteoporosis in USA to day; however, more alarming aspect is that there are many more people in preosteoporosis stage, and if proper steps are not taken today, they will end up with Osteoporosis sooner or later. This is the reason we all must be careful and act immediately to remain away from osteoporosis.
