Yohimbine: Supplement Review

Richard Banks
In the world of weight loss supplements, Yohimbine is a common ingredient. Yohimbine is a root commonly associated with sexual function in men. Diet drug makers include Yohimbine in products because of the stimulant effects. The marketing angle used is appetite suppression and weight loss. What causes Yohimbine to be wildly popular?

What's in a Supplement?

Pausinystalia Yohimbe.

What's in a Promise?

Most major supplement companies which use Yohimbine do so in two different venues. One venue where Yohimbine was being used was in the form of a stimulant and potential appetite. The other venue where Yohimbine was being used was in the form of a sexual aid for men. All though the FDA does not approve of natural supplement containing Yohimbine, a study was conducted.

In a test of 20 professional athletes, they were given a placebo or Yohimbine over the course of three weeks. With a dose of 10mg of Yohimbine twice daily, the test group taking Yohimbine saw a 9.3% decrease in body fat. The group taking the placebo did not see a loss of fat.

Studies have found Yohimbine may not help dieters reach their goals alone, but combined with appetite suppressive agents such as caffeine and green tea, success will be greater.

Since Yohimbine is associated with male sexual function, what does it do? Yohimbine simply increases blood flow to male extremities. There are warnings about potential misuse which could result in increased blood pressure.

The average cost of Yohimbineis $10 for varying quantities. Although the ingredients are linked to weight loss, be wary of products adding proprietary blends. A proprietary blend could be a toxic level of any chemical. Attempting to take large doses of Yohimbine can be toxic so ensure all dieter adhere to all warning labels. One warning on products containing Yohimbine is the age requirement of 18. Other warnings regarding Yohimbine consist of increased heart rate and hallucinations.

What's Good?

Yohimbine is proven to lower fat stores

Inexpensive.

What's Bad?

Severe side effects

Sexual side effects

What's the Final Word?

Yohimbine is a good supplement, but some of the side effects can prove to be deadly. Aside from the increased blood pressure and hallucinations, Yohimbine potentially could cause seizures and renal failure. Since Yohimbine can alter moods, a dieter with an unstable mental status should consult with a physician prior to taking.

Not every weight loss product will be right for every dieter. By far Yohimbine is a better alternative than over the counter weight loss drugs. Just like any other weight loss plan, diet and exercise will be needed to maximize results.
