Yom Kippur Break Fast Meals that Are Easy on the Stomach

Drew Bush
This is it. Yom Kippur runs from sundown Sunday September 27th to sundown September 28th. It is the last day of the Ten Days of Atonement in the Jewish religion (to see my article on Yom Kippur, click here). I am fasting starting sundown on September 27th and ending the fast at sundown September 28th. So the question is what do I eat after fasting for a whole day?

Typically, it is smart to eat light foods after performing a long period of fasting. Foods such as whole wheat bagels and toast with various spreads such as cheese, butter, and jam are eaten. It is not a good idea to fill up on heavy foods such as pizza or any meat dishes. One year, I ate at a restaurant after fasting for the whole day and ate way too much. I ended up suffering the whole night because I ate too much heavy food on an empty stomach. I will never do that again! Normally, I will eat bagels or toast after fasting all day. These foods are a lot easier on the stomach. Here are some other recipe ideas given on About.com:

1. Egg Soufflé

This savory dish is quick and easy to make and will be a good meal after the fast.

Ingredients:

¼ cup flour

½ teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

pepper

6 eggs

1 cup cottage cheese

2 cups grated cheese

½ stick melted butter

1 small onion, finely chopped

4 ounces sliced mushrooms

1 tomato sliced

fresh parsley

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Get a 9x9 casserole dish and grease it.

2. Combine flour, salt, pepper, and baking powder in a bowl and set aside.

3. In another bowl, beat the 6 eggs and add the cheeses, butter, mushrooms, and onion. Make sure all of it is mixed well.

4. Add the flour mixture to the other mixture.

5. Pour combined ingredients into the casserole dish.

6. Put slices of tomato on top of the dish and push into the mixture gently. Put some parsley on top.

7. Bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes or longer as needed.

2. Fat-Free Cinnamon Sponge Cake

I thought that this also sounded like a good recipe to make after the fast. I think I will try it this year.

Ingredients:

5 eggs

4 tablespoons sugar

4 tablespoons sifted cake flour

1 tablespoon cold water

2 drops vanilla extract

cinnamon for sprinkling

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Use a whisk to mix the eggs and sugar together. It should look light and fluffy.

3. Fold in the sifted flour and then add the vanilla extract and water. Be sure to fold and not beat so that the cake will not lose its light texture.

4. Acquire a shallow square baking tin and pour half of the batter into it.

5. Sprinkle some cinnamon on top of the mixture.

6. Put the rest of the batter on top.

7. Bake for approximately a half hour or until an inserted knife comes out clean.

My family has never really taken the time to make any special dishes after the Yom Kippur fast, so I think I will make this year different and try some of it out. I have to admit it sounds pretty yummy!

I like the cinnamon sponge cake! Yum! L'shanah tovah, a little late, but AC released this for Yom Kippur... a little too late! Great article, though!
