Yoplait Strawberry Cheesecake Yogurt - Product Review

Yoplait Original 99% Fat Free Strawberry Cheesecake Yogurt comes in a 6-ounce container. If you aren't familiar with Yoplait, it's design is distinctively "upside down", with the narrower end at the top. I always felt that the packaging gave the impression that this was a smaller-than-average sized portion of yogurt. As Yoplait tends to aim advertising at those trying to lose weight or to have a low-cal, low-fat indulgence, this may be what they were going for. But 6 ounces if fairly typical.

Yoplait Original 99% Fat Free Strawberry Cheesecake Yogurt has predominately pink and white packaging. Towards the top is the Yoplait logo, which includes a friendly pink daisy. This gives the impression that this brand of is marketed towards women. I won't get into the weird stereotypes our culture had developed with gender and color. Suffice it to say I'm not drawn in by pink. I do like daisies though, so I guess there is still some appeal. What's more appealing are the images of cut and whole strawberries and a sliver of cheesecake. What's odd is that the cheesecake appears to be topped with cherries. There's also a little yellow banner off to the right that tells us this serving of Yoplait Original 99% Fat Free Strawberry Cheesecake Yogurt will provide us with 20 percent of our daily value of calcium and vitamin D. A good amount, if fairly typical of yogurt.

Yoplait Original 99% Fat Free Strawberry Cheesecake Yogurt like was less dense than the custard-like yogurt than I prefer, but it was still good and creamy. The strawberry flavor was good, in not out of the ordinary, with well-distributed bits of berry. The berry bits were a bit small though, so their flavor was less distinguishable than some yogurts and they didn't add a lot to the texture. The cheesecake flavor reminded me of the flavor of a packaged cheesecake more than the "real" New York style cheesecakes my daughter sometimes makes, but overall it was really quite good. Though it could have been stronger for my taste. .

Yoplait Original 99% Fat Free Strawberry Cheesecake Yogurt fares pretty well in the "healthy" department too. While there is a lot of sugar (27 grams!), there are only 170 calories per container. And the total saturated fat if only 5 percent. Besides having a good dose of calcium and Vitamin D, Yoplait Original 99% Fat Free Strawberry Cheesecake Yogurt also gives a good bit of protein (11 percent), potassium (7 percent), vitamin A (15 percent) and phosphorus (15 percent). Like many yogurts it also contains acidophilus, a good bacteria to keep the body in balance.

Now for the bad news. As I've mentioned in other reviews, the bigger brand name yogurts tend to have high fructose corn syrup, which this yogurt has, in addition to regular sugar. It also contains tricalcium phosphate, which I'm GUESSING is a preservative, but could be a nutritional additive. It is colored with carmine to give it its nice bright pink color. I think the bits of strawberry confettied throughout make this unnecessary, as that would be enough for visual interest.

All in all, Yoplait Original 99% Fat Free Strawberry Cheesecake Yogurt, was a good tasting yogurt. While I have found yogurts which seem to be a bit better for you (Anderson Erickson yogurts for example) this one still has decent health benefits. So if you are a fan of cheesecake in all its forms I highly recommend Yoplait Original 99% Fat Free Strawberry Cheesecake Yogurt as a yogurt to try.

Enjoy!
