York Beach Maine...A Place to Make Memories

Childhood Memories I'll Never Forget

From the long sands to the short sands you'll love the beautiful vacation spot of York Beach Maine. Since I could remember every summer my grandparents would take me to York Beach. The drive seemed forever when you know what's coming. As a child my favorite part was walking along the rocks and collecting seashells, starfish, crabs and sea urchins. The memories make it feel like that was just yesterday.

I recall eating ice cream from Brown's ice cream then walking up to see Nubble Light at Cape Neddick , what a beautiful lighthouse. They say there is a man in the rocks, not literally but if you look close you can see a face in the rocks. I never noticed that until I was a teenager but it sticks in my head now. You can sit there for hours and just look out over the ocean, watch the waves hit the rocks and the breeze take a little splash into your face. There really is nothing like the smell of the ocean.

Ok now I'll get to the part kids like so much, the arcade. I remember wasting quarter after quarter playing ski ball and grab machines off the short sands and loving every minute of it and after all my quarters disappeared I would drag my grandpa with me over to The Goldenrod to watch them make salt water taffy in the window. Then he would bring me to the zoo/amusement park and we would have all kinds of entertaining fun.

We can't forget all the shopping and restaurants in the area as well. Fox's Lobster House was a great place to go to get a fantastic Maine lobster. Well isn't that why everyone goes to Maine, of course there are other places along the way, even places you can ship a lobster anywhere. Then we always made our way to the shell store as I called it as a child. I cannot recall the real name of the store but it had a wonderful array of shells, starfish and all kinds of York Beach Maine collectables.

So I defiantly recommend York Beach Maine as a family Vacation destination.Compared to most vacation destinations York is actually rather inexpensive, which makes it much more possible to have the most fun for your money. It changed my life as a child, gave me memories I'll never forget. Looking back at those moments make me realize how much a family vacation brings a family together for life. So if you want to go play in the water, or walk the shore hand in hand with your loved one, or watch your child in awe at the salt water taffy, or eat a giant delicious Maine lobster then this is the place for you!

The Keepers of the lighthouse used a trolley system to transport groceries and other supplies from the mainland. A wooden box suspended on a cable runs between the Nubble and the mainland. You can see the trolley system from shore.

I moved to York Beach in 1949 as a 10 year old. We lived there or almost four years and then moved to NYC. Even though I was born in Mass, I did and still do consider York Beach my hometown. I can still see the people I knew as a schoolboy at thr grammar schho, junior high and one year of high school as they were then and have been fortunate to make contact with some of them by e mail. I so hope to be able to get back there at least once more in my lifetime.
