Yosemite's most well known rock formation is Half Dome, though there are others such as El Capitan. Rock climbers love many of the Yosemite formations. There are also many beautiful waterfalls, such as Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Falls, Nevada Falls, and Vernal Falls. Many animals can be seen in Yosemite National Park. Though most people spend their time in the valley proper, Tuolumne Meadows is a lovely place to go. The drive takes a couple of hours, but there are many waterfalls and viewpoints along the way, making it well worth the time. Another excellent place to visit is the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. These unique and famous giant sequoias are the largest living things on Earth. Wawona is where the historic Wawona Hotel is located. Mule deer can be seen everywhere, and coyotes, bears, raccoons, and many other animals are common sights.
Yosemite changes with the seasons. Summer is warm and dry. As the snow melts in the late spring and early summer, waterfalls are largest in May and June. However, late in the summer waterfalls are only a trickle or are completely dry. Wildflowers are in abundance in the summer. In the fall, the weather varies widely, from hot and dry to cold and wet. Most of the waterfalls have very little water; in some cases, the waterfalls look blue because of the ice surrounding them. During winter, some of the roads are closed due to heavy snowfall. The weather is usually snowy and cold. In the beginning waterfalls are fairly dry, but after some snow and rain has fallen the flow increases again. In spring the weather starts to warm up, though there are still occasional winter storms. Waterfalls and waterways become engorged with water as the snows start to melt.
There are many activities to do in Yosemite, from easy to strenuous. Hiking trails of all difficulty levels abound in Yosemite. Most of the waterfalls just require a short stroll to view, while for others a full-blown hike is necessary. One lovely trail is the Mirror Lake, while more serious hikers may enjoy the Half Dome hike. There are a couple of charming villages in Yosemite, full of activities and places to eat, to enjoy as well. Other activities include biking, skiing, and rafting down the Merced River.
Because there are such a variety of things to do in Yosemite National Park, it is a wonderful place to visit for all people. This national park is often considered to be one of the most beautiful and majestic of all of the United States' national parks. It is an excellent place to see nature at its greatest.
