You Better Slow Down

Mary E. Coe
You're out there running free, living in the street
Dancing to the rhythm of your very own beat
Running too fast, girl, you better slow down
All fun and laughter, thinking like a clown
You're smarter than that, girl, turn your life around

I'm free, I'm you grown, you yell and you shout
I can do what I want, I'm going to sprout
Is this your definition what life's all about

You can smoke, you can drink, even visit a bar
Think about it, girl, don't forget who you are
Running with the in crowd, think you're so cool
No directions, no rules, you don't even need school
Turn your life around, girl, you have the right tool

Living life in the street
Dancing to the your beat
You're out there dancing, running here and there
Make sure the dance you're dancing, lead you somewhere

Somewhere with some directions
Somewhere, you don't lose you
Somewhere, you see the great things that only you can do

You left the comfort of your home
They expect too much from you
Now that you're out here, do you have plans for you
Think about it, girl, to yourself be true

Is this fast and fun life the only way to go
All good times and laughter, I don't think so
You deserve a better life, where you can learn and grow
Give yourself directions, give yourself rules
To make it in this world, you need rules, you need school

Fun and laughter, self abuse, free to live wild
If that's the life you're living, you're not grown, you're still a child.

I agree with you, Mary. Many teenagers are in too much of a rush to grow up But oftentimes, they end up racing ahead of themselves and then regretting their actions.

Your poems get better and better. I would add to those who need this one: someday the lifestyle may cause your death.

Great poem. I love the rhythm of it. It fits the subject matter.
